Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
Ultimate for me that is.
Now my ultimate controller would:
* Have a completely customisable interface, with an unlimited number of interface setups (like for a particular device), with an unlimited number of screens for each device setup
* Allow me to control every conceivable parameter in any Live Device or AU or VST plugin AND every other interface element
* Have two-way communication between Live's interface, Live devices, AU/VST plugs and the controller, so that the controller can display correct and current parameter settings and other info like the state of various Live interface elements
* Have the ability to automatically switch to a previously created screen set for currently selected device (or AU or VST plug)
* Have the ability to easily disable the above behaviour (lock surface to device/AU/VST)
* Have the ability to easily select (from the control surface) which device/AU/VST to control
* Have something similar to the automapping of Novation's Automap 3.x, where you get auto-mapping of every parameter of the selected device, that you can then use as a quick starting point to create your own custom mapping - BUT with full and equal support for both AU/VST parameters and every single Live parameter
* A scripting language allowing me to create more complex tasks with a single interface element (like create a single button that creates a new track, inserts Amplitube 3 into it, arms the track and then switches to an interface setup created specifically for dealing with such a track.
* Supports hooking up a couple of foot switches and a swell pedal or two, that can be used to trigger any interface element or script.
Now, how much of this would I get by combining a Lemur, Mu, Max4Live and Live 8? A lot of it I suppose, after watching the Mu videos and reading up a bit (no foot switches though, a shame). Anyone who's actually tried Mu?

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
I've thought about buying a Lemur many times, but one thing has always held me back (aside from the cost): There's no way to tell where the controls are without looking at them (hence away from the audience).
Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
Good point, hadn't thought of that. I wouldn't use it live though, I'm primarily a guitar player (hence the foot switch itch).ark wrote:I've thought about buying a Lemur many times, but one thing has always held me back (aside from the cost): There's no way to tell where the controls are without looking at them (hence away from the audience).

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
In my opinion I think the lemur in my setup will be very useful with the implementation of the "bridge" those effects control looks really awesome.. and will be the perfec match to trigger loop while I dj with my serato scratch setup
but I dont know how to justify a 2k controller just for fx!!

all you mentionned is right under my eyes:
200 $ multitouch touch screen + usine + free coming soon add on:
= messy , pre alpha version, still you can imagine what it can do:
http://www.sensomusic.com/usine

WE WANT AN OFFICIAL ABLETON OSC SUPPORT NOW, NOT A COMMERCIAL LOCK WITH MAX
THERE IS NOT ONLY MAX, LEMUR, USINE, PD, Resolume, VDMX, GrandVJ, Modul8 MANY SOFTS USE OSC NOW!!

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
no one can say that the lemur is not amazing. I remember when I first saw it I thought it was the most futuristic thing I'd ever seen. I'll be honest that these days the touchscreen is so common that they need to either drop the price by HALF or come out with something new. I just don't know what they could come out with for the future of controllers.
$2000.......plus bubble screen issues that I've read about...not for me

Only bubble issues I've read about ended like this:
"and they fixed it."

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
i agree, lemur is nice but 2000$ today is just insane.
plus the fact that's totally locked, need to use their own app, a bit complex double patch osc,
poor resolution.
whereas a multitouch screen like upcoming ones are at least 4x ~ 10x cheaper, can be used as a standard screen and by the way work with any app, far more modular, with or without max, usine, ect...
jazzmuttant must really do something or they will lost the multitouch battle, and imo they merit to loose it with such insane price/locking politics.

I have not kept up I just looked into getting a year ago and not all the stories ended with them fixing it.
But that might have been in the midst of the problems and I am guessing that you were the one the people who had the issue and I guess them fixed it for you
I have to say I have no clue, just saying what I read....which made me not get one because at the time I could have afforded, but decided to get keyboards and dj stuff instead and am happy so far.
Touch screens are everywhere and they just need to evolve and lead the industry just as they have with the lemur and dexter

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
Yeah, with all these touch screen thingys flooding the market this year, someone will eventually come up with a non-DIY style solution that'll rival the Lemur. Novation already has an iPhone version of Automap. It's pretty lame -you can't do all that much with that tiny screen. But they could probably expand that app pretty easily, into something darn cool for the iPad. Problem is, they'd be competing with their own products, so maybe not. But I certainly won't buy a Lemur until after the Frankfurt Messe next week!
But even at €2000, I think the Lemur may be worth it, at least with Mu.
I used to use all analogue gear (I'm old!). Now I've got everything in my laptop and that's great! I think software has finally come to the point where it can sound just as good as analogue gear, at least in a mix. But where did all my knobs go? Sure, I've got my MIDI controllers. But there's really nothing like an interface that's designed specifically for the task at hand. I miss this so much, I've been thinking seriously about getting rid of the soft synths and buy me a Polysix, an MS-20 and a Pro One. Now that would set me back at least €2000. And wouldn't fit nicely in my laptop bag...
Still, it's a lot of money, so I'd love to hear some actual user testimonials. Before I put my kidney up for sale on eBay...

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
I use my Lemur with MU and it works great!
There are 2-3 things that need to be improved (and will) in this beta release.
Still the way it is, it's fully satisfying IMO, and I guess most users should agree with me.
The performance mode is awesome, it allows you to scan once your project and then run it without sluggishness.
You may go and check http://forum.jazzmutant.com, read the observations and improvements suggested.

Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
sluggishness that isn't attributed to technical limitations of the lemur. It's a latency limitation of live's API. The same sluggishness will have to be overcome by anyone attempting to re-create the functionality of the 'mu'. be it with an iPad touchscreen or any other touchscreen you care to mention.fuzzyhead wrote:The performance mode is awesome, it allows you to scan once your project and then run it without sluggishness.

But how much from my wish list at the top of this thread would you say I could expect from Lemur/Mu/M4L? (Foot switches disregarded!)

Regarding on your wishlist, it always depends on your aims!
Almost everything is possible, it's all about imagination and ..yeah, time!
As you (I guess) already know, there are no knobs or encoders, etc. ..
It's a visual, tactile thing!
Fact is, you're able to use the Lemur together with your laptop for internal access or with an audio interface
to control any gear over MIDI. As the Lemur works with OSC over ethernet cable you
work with "virtual MIDI" (so you might have to use other MIDI translation programs).
With MU the awsome thing is: it's plug and play! And it's soooo much fun to use!
Furthermore you can later on manipulate it the interface and trim it to your needs...
At last I have to say: yes, it's not cheap, I know! But I don't get this complaining about.
I mean if someone in the past wanted to buy new gear, synths, etc. Man, there've been no software version.
You weighed up for your next investment. This piece of gear is all worth it. Nowerdays it feels like everything that
costs more than a dvd is too much; hey even on shitty iPhone Apps they're compaining about
the worth of it at 2,-€ ... Sorry I don't get it..! Puh.. now I feel bit better...
Look outside the window and find yourself
Re: Lemur + Max4Live + Mu = the ultimate Live controller?
I think it won't take too much for apple to build on iPad technology and give us
a touchscreen Macbook Pro. Then The Abes could follow...
I'd love Mu but a Lemur costs too much. I'll stick with my Launchpad...
