I was talking about this with mates the other day, apparently the iconic image of the student standing in front of the tank in Tianamen Square and the whole protest movement was until now erased from Chinese history which such efficiency that the students at the same college that the protest guy studied never heard the story, and that's their young intellectual elite. It'll be interesting to see what happens now the massacre is the top search return in Google for Tianamen.

I've a few expat chinese mates here who were completely oblivious to the Tianamen Square situation.

I mean, you'd think even after a media blackout the story would still travel through word of mouth ?

Having said that, I've met some chinese who were staying here on refugee status... and they were pretty much afraid of their own shadow. Spoke in hushed tones about certain things, despite the fact no one else was around to hear...

That's a powerful built in fear of authority if it continues even when they're abroad, combine that with generations of families with 'only child' children carrying the weight of their families expectation and legacy and you have what adds up to 1.3 billion people badly messed up by their government.

They weren't afraid or paranoid. They are scouting your defences, setting up drop sites, and will soon be taking over. How's your Mandarin?

BTW, the whole Tianamen Square thing? Completely staged. Just like the so-called Moon Landing. Never happened. Propaganda ploy on the part of the USA Right which was, in fact, in collusion with the Chinese government.

Making China the 'convenient' bad guy whilst simultaneously beginning to export jobs and take advantage of cheap labour = Pure Fucking Evil Genius.

Now that Google has stated it can't live with self-censorship, some have suggested the company is abandoning Chinese netizens for the sake of a public relations coup.

Google partly has itself to blame for this, by glossing over the details in hyping the move to Hong Kong. In practical terms this move merely returns the state of search in mainland China to what it was five years ago, pre-Google.cn. Mainland Googlers will now encounter the same Great Firewall of Internet filters as they always have when using Google.com.hk, the flagship Google.com or any other country's Google engine. The added danger now is that by blowing up Google.cn and irking Beijing, Google may see more of its services blocked or disrupted by the Great Firewall.
