COMPRESSOR

Post by maximlee » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:38 pm

i have version 6..... so this may be improved by 8...i dont do that much work in live but i have noticed that the compressors are very amatuerish to say the least...im used to working in cubase and if i lower the imput of the signal it will lower but with in live compressors i have noticed that even thou u lower the input sometimes the levels to not change.... this jsut leads to not really knowing what the compressor is doing at all..... doing personal stuff at home is ok but in a live enviroment on a club system i am worried as i have no real control over my compressors

any help would be very cool

I hink you just need to get used to it. I have to say I find Lives compressor pretty damn good, Thats notto say I dont use others but it is one great native little utility compressor.

what more control do you need ? I don't understand.. Live's compressor controls are pretty standard

other than that ..

Live's compressor was lacking in v6. They improved the compressor vastly in v7 of Live.

There are lots of decent freeware compressors if Live 6's is not doing it for you.

Jeroen Breebart's PC-2 http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/

there's your problem.

Live 6 has two old and crap compressors,
Live 7 got them united into one device with curve control, EQ and sidechain, etc etc
Live 8 brought a new dynamic control device, with multiband expansion and compression

I have 6 and I don't like the compressor either. In fact, if I really need to use it, I export the audio first, then open it in Audacity and use the compressor there because in Audacity, I can at least see that there is something going on. Then I just save it and open the compressed audio in Live. Not ideal, but I need to train my ears better in order to use Compressor better.

what? not a good thing? I don't go overboard with it and make it a solid rectangle, if that's what you're thinking...

The compressor plugin in Live 7 and 8 is mint. It's versatile and sounds great in most applications. The only thing it doesn't do well is 'vintage' type emulations, but having various modes and controls, it's a good sounding and versatile compressor.

Rather than exporting to audacity, why not use of the freebie vst plugins mentioned inside Live.
Any of those, or the Kjaerhus Classis Compressor (another freebie) are very useful.

Normally I'd say update to 8, but don't do this without demoing the product first as it definately has not had the stability of Live 6 for SOME users.
