Sidechain (Ducking) causing bad sounds

Post by luxembourg » Wed Mar 24, 2010 9:30 am

Hi, title says it all really.

When I use sidechain compression (to get the ducking effect) on thick basslines, it seems to be causing the bass to slighty crackle/distort, basically just not sound as nice as I think it could do.

This only happens on my thicker basslines.

Anyone had the same problem, or able to offer advice? :?:

Is it a clicking type sound? Its usually an attack setting issue in my exp. Fiddle with the attack untill the sound disappears but the ducking/pumping is still working as you want!!

I've yet to experience a compressor that doesn't make crackling sounds if your attack and release settings on the
side-chaining are very short.

I have the same problem here! Not happening on other sounds, just the beefy bassline.. no idea why. Mode 1 acts in not so nice way for ducking me thinks..

I agree with Zygi, FF1 is the best setting for sidechaining.

If u like to keep the attack on the sidechained signal, it good. But if u want a not-attacky sidechained signal, hard limited, then Mode 1 is not working at all.

Hi Steffensen,

Can you post the compressor settings you are using please. Also are you side chaining from a kick drum or other material?

Sidechain from a Kick yes. My setting are simple, release at 33ms, and attack at the lowest, 0.1 i think it is..
Shouldnt be any problems. It isnt on any other material.
