Korg NanoKontrol, Live and Reason

Post by barciewicz » Tue Mar 23, 2010 6:41 pm

Is there any way to get NanoKontrol to work with Live and Reason simultaneously? Like, scene 1 is working with Live, scene 2 with Reason etc. When i try to set Nano as a control surface in Reason the "MIDI device might be in use by another application" box pops up.

Nope. When you've activated the controller in Live (Rewire host), it becomes unavailable in Reason.

Thanks. And what if I got two Nanos? Would it work?

well there might be a workaround.
you could map specific midccs to the controls on one page (or more) of the nanokontrol. for instance cc74 controls the filter frequency in almost(?) all reason devices. (see midi implementation charts either in your reason documentation folder or on their homepage).
so if you activate (blue hand) an external reason instrument, the corresponding controls in reason should be be adressed.

this is theory though, i can't check it here right now.

would be much easier if midiccs were mappable to macro controls (hint, ableton, hint!)

^^ No, the Blue Hand thingy won't work, but you are correct that sending a specific CC on a specific channel from Live to
Reason will let you control Reason's devices when you arm the track containing the External Instrument in Live. Have a look
at Reason's MIDI implementation chart to decide what CC's to send. I think that the CC range from 70-78 or something like
that controls the Combinator rotaries and buttons, so those would be "CC's well spent", considering you can wrap anything inside
a Combinator and hook up controls to its rotaries and buttons.

But, yeah: I think adding a second device - one which you don't activate in Live - should work. If Korg's MIDI driver can
tell one NanoKontrol from another, that is.

Yeah, you're right about the blue hand.

But I had time to try it. And it works! Yay!

So what I did was: I opened the nanokontrol editor. Went to bank four (as the rest on my nanokontrol is reserved for the myr-script). Set the first four rotarys to midicc 71-74 and the first 4 buttons to midicc 75 to 78. As I have only combinators this is sufficient (for me).
so if i arm a Reason external instrument I can control the corresponding combinator from within Live.

Now I want to do the opposite:

As i have some knobs and faders assigned to certain effects in Live, I dont want these knobs to control Reason's instrument at the same time. But Reason receives CCs from Nano (when the arm button on Live's track is on) even though and i dont have Nano set up as a control surface in Reason's preferences.
Like , I have an Ext. Ins. track in Live connected to Reason's Malstrom and I have Live's delay device on this track, controlled by Nano. So I've found out that operating the delay also affects certain Malstrom;s parameters.
Is there a quick way to prevent Reason from receiving CCs? Or do I have to do everything manually (but how? using Nano's editor?)
