Newbie requiring assistance

Having major issues trying to record guitar through Novation Nio 2/4 into Ableton Live.
Occasionally it appears the input is registering but hearing nothing back through the Speakers.

Tried using both the ASIO and MME/Direct X options(this seems to work but I believe
the latency will be improved using the ASIO option)

Have followed all lessons and tutorials but to no avail.

Running on an Acer Intel Pentium Dual Core on Vista Basic.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I have been at this 3 days straight now

Are you selecting the external input on the track, arming the track, pushing global record, and all of that kind of stuff?
