can someone shed light on what a "sub-group" is and if it's possible with Live? For instance:
"I usually start up a track with at least 15 or 20 sub-groups set up and all routed differently, like I’ll have the kick and snare on a group and compress those, then send that to another group and add a couple percussion elements and EQ or compress that group.
From there, I’ll route most of the highs like hats or shakers to one group and operate on them to make them all really flow together — maybe some compression, EQ, maybe a very mild flange or phase for some movement."
i can be a n00b sometimes. thanks alot, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Um... an over-elaborate way of complicating your mix allowing endless opportunities for tweaking and futzing so that is never quite finished entirely to your satisfaction.. therefore entirely possible in Live

you can group tracks. then you have a sub-group.

Try taking a look at Tom Cosm's site http://www.cosm.co.nz/he has a stack of good videos and example sets you can download. Being old school he tends to organise his own groups using audio or return tracks rather than using Live 8's group tracks, but the concept is the same. There are lots of ways you can group sounds in Live: Tracks, Racks, Impulse, Drum Racks and some of these can be nested - racks of racks for example. Probably best to stick to a system you understand well rather than scattering effects and sounds all over the place then wondering how it all hangs together when you go back to it after 3 months....
