Setting up an Access Virus B with Ableton

Post by robbie-f » Wed Mar 31, 2010 1:24 pm

Hi,

Just wondering how anybody who has an Access Virus B set it up with Ableton. I'm using an M-audio Fast track pro soundcard. I can't seem to get the midi from Ableton to trigger the Virus but I can with Cubase. No sound seems to be coming into the soundcard either yet I can hear it if I plug my headphones directly into it.

Hopefully someone who has a similar setup can adivse me on what way they have it configured.

Cheers,
Robbie

I don't have a Fast Track Pro, but your best bet is to read chapter 13 "Routing and I/O" in the manual for configuring Ableton's Midi & Audio setup. Then use an "External Instrument" to receive the Virus B's audio.

Since your sound card has insert jacks, you can also use an "External Audio Effect" to send audio to the B's inputs and use its filters.

It's all in the manual.

the midi cables which are going from your computer to your virus, how are they setup?

example, if they were setup using a usb>midi cable.. open ableton.. create a track, change the input to whatever channels the virus is on..
create a midi track, and set the midi output to whatever device the midi is on, and midi channel to whatever channel the virus is set to.

I have Virus C and its working fine. I have all the 6 outs coming to 6 line ins of my ultralite. On the default live set i have group called Virus which has 6 external instrument plugins each having midi channels 1-6 and audio ins from ultralite 3-8. Although i often use virus 1 & 2 outs as a stereo pair.

You should check your I/O configurations from lives preferences (so that you have enabled Inputs from your audio interface, found in Preferences: Audio: input config + Check that you have selected the fast track as audio input device.) and on your virus track.
