What exactly is a "construction kit"?

Post by Peripatetic » Fri Apr 02, 2010 3:31 pm

Probably a dumb, basic question I know.

I read it all the time in re: sample DVDs that come with mags and other places where you can get samples, but I don't know exactly what it refers to and I'm just curious.

To my knowledge it's a collection of loops, MIDI clips, effects, instruments to get started on a song.

Which is pretty lame IMO because it's like half a song already made and you just put the pieces together, I guess it'd be cool to snag a couple elements and make them your own but making a song out of a construction kit is pretty lame.. if that is what those things actually are I'm not entirely sure.

That's actually what I had kind of gathered but it seemed weird that what you just described would be an actual selling point for something so I wasn't sure.

I guess if the idea is, "here is a well rounded collection of samples that you could use to make a complete song", (i.e., drum sounds, a couple sampled synths, etc.) it would make more sense, but if it's just loops that you are meant to piece together it seems kind of lame.

That's a great question. I have libraries that have them. I assume it's basically song files that you can remix.

The ones I'm checkin out in Live 8 Suite are a combination of pretty much entire arrangements (like 15 or so clips in session view) or just a synth with a few MIDI clips on one track, not saying it's not okay to snag some stuff and mess around with it and make it fresh but I just think it's no fun to play around with someone else's session if you're looking to create some music of your own. I could see myself using a dope drum rack from something like that tho

Hi folks,

At least for us, the goal was to provide Construction Kits for two purposes:

- to use as "song starters" for your own music
- to use as tutorial material, to get an idea of how parts can be combined to create finished music

exactly,
there's swathes of folks out there who are getting into music production with absolutely no frame of reference. Zero. They like hearing music - that's about all they know to start with. No musical concepts, no technical concepts, no comprehension of the terminology used in either...

they have to start somewhere.
