Yeah, Melbourne's not bad if you're into:
a/ most vibrant music scene in the country.
b/ best food in the country
c/ best coffee in the country
d/ paying half the rent than you would in Sydney for equivalent dwelling
e/ the only state that had a majority vote in favour of Oz becoming a republic.
f/ F1 Grand Prix, VFA Grand Final, Boxing Day Test.
g/ Heaps of parks and gardens all over town
i/ etc.

You heard that too? I'm relocating there in June, so I will be sorely disappointed if these rumours turn out to be unfounded.

Don't forget it was a penal colony.... As an expat I had a laugh when I first went back to Melbourne in 86...

Customs agent: Do you have a criminal record?
Me: No. Why? Do you still need a one to get in?
Customs agent: Laffs...

Except these days it works the other way - in Britain almost everyone I knew was involved in some kind of criminal activity, whereas in OZ you dont generally have to any more because you can actually afford to live AND do stuff as well!

Although I'm not sure I'd want to test the ZZ Top Bearded freaks of Brisbane on that little hypothesis.

I am actually german, and I just moved from Sydney up to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, but still only an hour and a bit away from Sydney.
I would really like to check out Melbourne though, heard good stuff about it.

Toyo I lived in Blackheath for nearly 3 years (2 stations past Katoomba.
Or Bleakheath as we affectionately called it after being snowed in for 2 weeks one winter  .
Lived in Sydney for around 5 years.
Spent a year in Adelaide ( a year i'd rather forget :? )
Love Melbourne to death though.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

I'm from Melbourne, but I currently live in Holland. I get back to Melbourne once a year to enjoy the food, space, clean air and water and SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!
I"ve been to Sydney on numerous occassions, but give me Melbourne any day!!!!
The only thing I hate about OZ is that music gear costs far more than what I can get it for over here in Holland.

Take the word "music" out of that and it still works, heh.

Maaaaaate...I'm from Sydney, just not living there right now. Lots of Australians on this board, which is very nice to see! You guys should start an Ableton love-in in Sydney a la AJ's idea, sounds like it''d be fun and useful.
