I just got my SL MkII. I've set up automap as Novation directed and am having no trouble accessing 3rd party plug-ins such as Waves. I can't figure out how to set up instruments within live for use. I know it has to do with learn mode, but I can't get it. For example, how do I assign an impulse kit to the drum pads? Or how do I set up operator so that I can assign knobs, dials, and buttons? I have read the Novation manuals on setting up the Mk2 and using Automap, but even the specific instructions on learning and editing parameters (under Creating your own control maps) yield no results. Have you gone through this? It seems like a simple thing. I am pretty blown away by how poorly set-up Novation's web page is. I've looked at a number of youtube videos to try to get a handle on this, but am only getting snippits, and not exactly what I need.

yeah, Novation's site sucks.
you have to turn on the drum pads and dials and whatnots. hit EDIT then twiddle a control to adjust its parameters.
the thing you're missing is that not all the controls on the SL are automapped, just the faders on the right and the row of knobs at the top left. look over the automap info with that in mind.
Impulse uses the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B in the second octave, something like that. anyway, it's all white keys starting from C. you can tweak this a bit by putting a scale and pitch plug ins before the Impulse.
Operator should just automap. look for the blue hand to appear on the top of the device and read the text at the very bottom of the Live GUI to tell you 'Operator is controlled by <device>' something like that.
hth. it can be a pain in the ass to setup, but once you do you can pretty much set it and forget it.

One very important thing to understand which people never do at first: There is automap universal and then there is Ableton's instant mapping template. You only use automap universal with plug-ins (although it also has a user midi mode), and you use the Ableton template for Ableton devices. You do not use automap universal for controlling ableton devices, only plug-ins. This is the mode when you press the automap light and you can assign all controls. When the automap light is off and you're on the Ableton template, then the top 8 encoders control live's devices and the sliders are for mixer functions. You must have the proper settings in Live's preferences for this.
Download the SL user manuals. Read the part about Ableton setup in the DAW setup guide and then read the one about automap universal (ie. plug-in automap).

I now get the difference between automap universal and Ableton's instant mapping template. I'd like to focus on the Ableton side in this post, since I've also got questions about the Automap side and about Reason. I'm hoping that understanding Abe's instant mapping template will help to clear some of my other confusion up.
To be clear, when I am using ableton's instant mapping, the Automap button's light is off and I am ignoring the automap HUD display. Furthermore, in abe's instant mapping, I am ignoring the SL's Automap navigation buttons (learn, view, user, fx, etc.). All True?
Am I supposed to be selecting the ableton template via the speed dial? I haven't done that. I did follow setup instructions, and when I turn on the SL, it briefly flashes "Ableton Live Automap - Template 32", so I suppose I am doing the right thing here. Also, when I start a new project, the SL's display asks me to select a device in Live to edit it. I should note that I am using port 1 as input and output for the SL. I couldn't figure anything out on port 2 for I/O.
Given the above, it seems useful to try to set up drum pads on the SL as a way of learning how to use Abe instant mapping. I've still got an impulse kit highlighted (Nu Romantic). I can play the drums on the music keyboard. I've tried to map the drum hits (either on the keyboard or using the mouse to click the pad within impulse) to the SL's pads. I've tried this using Abe midi mapping (and btw did go back to reread both manuals again), and I've also looked at Map Mode within the Nu Romantic instrument. I've mapped stuff in midi mapping before without trouble, but can't get the SL's pads to assign. I should note that my APC40 is having no trouble managing volumes of these 8 drum pads. I am having a similar experience using Operator. In this case, with the patch "Lead-Like Oberheim" I can see one row of parameters (attack, decay, sustain, etc.) and can select them by touch, but cannot edit them. I have no access to other parameters and don't know how to tie them to Live. Could one of you lay out the sequence to assign controls on the SL to stuff in Live?
