does LIVE drives licensing you nuts ? ... me to !

Post by aklisiewicz » Sun Apr 04, 2010 2:02 am

Live licensing policy really sucks! I wonder if other people have the same problem, because what I have experienced is the most stupid thing one could do to this software.

I just joined domain on 2 PCs on my local network and all of the sudden Live is asking me to unlock the software (despite it was already unlocked). I wonder what is going to happen If I disconnect from domain? If it will ask me again to unlock, I would be swearing the programmer who did that. With the lack of better word I would call the engineer who designed Live licensing policy dumb (if not an idiot), and will put him in font of the PC and (as a punishment) sentence him to do registration/unlocking procedure for 50 years (in prison).

I'm asking all of you who are dissatisfied with Ableton licensing policy to send them an emails, and ask them to change it, because this is the worst thing so far that could have happened to this (otherwise) excelent DAW tool, which beats every other tool on the market thanks to implemented intelligence.

Haven't had that issue. It's a lot easier system than IK Multimedia or Arturia that's for sure.

yeah, one of the better licensing/activating process in the DAW world.

The worst is Native Instruments.

I have had my problems with ableton's unlocking system but they have always responded adequately so I am happy with the way they do this.

If software has a dongle. I will not buy it.

Live's copyright protection is among the best out there, but one real life situation which happened to me is a reason why I kept other dongled software around.

I got seriously pissed off with Steinberg around the launch of Cubase 4, where they did a lot of bad things IMO, including going back on a promise (promised on 3 separate occasions) of an update to SX 3.1.2., dropping support for DX plugins and not mentioning it until the product was on the shelf and general arrogance and poor attitude. I bought into Live at Live 6 (after demoing 5) and thought I would eventually eliminate Cubase. I upgraded to L7 and then one weak point of Live's C/R response hit me - I had been booked to go out and record a songwriter in their home when my computer completely failed. The HDD had to be replaced, windows and programs reinstalled etc and everything was fine except I got the block from Live. I requested an unlock and given this was the weekend, it took them 3 days to get that to me. On the other hand, Cubase was not an issue because I just put the dongle in and it and all of my Arturia, Korg, Virsyn etc programs all worked immediately. ended up having to use Cubase SX3 for the recording session because Live would not work/save. So, if you're just recording your own stuff at home, having to wait a couple of days is a minor irritation, but if you rely on it semi-pro/pro for recording it's a problem.

I'm not especially a fan of the dongle but in a hardware failure it's still the most convenient and quickest option. I also had RN Digital plugins which got lost when the computer died and I hadn't backed it up recently enough to get those plugins on the backup. The company has now gone bust and if I had gone the i-lok route, I would have access to 2 great plugins that I am now lost forever (INspector XL and Unique-lizer 2.0). Propellerheads Record is a good dongle system in that you can run it without the dongle by internet usernam/password authorization when you do gigs or mobile recording, or run it in demo mode (it still allows you to function).

I've also seen the other side of the coin - broken dongle, which like Live's unlocks, took 2-3 days to get the dongle activation codes back. For these reasons, I run more than one DAW (Live AND Cubase) and also have Reaper as my backup (serial code only activation).

It is absolutely fine but I really really really wish that they could have some way of allowing you to request extra licences on the weekend. I tried to get one last Friday but apparently they are closed on Good Friday which means I can't use my new laptop to do a whole heap of recording today and tomorrow (presume they are closed on the monday too) i should have requested the licences earlier but I didn't figure they would be closed Good Friday, ah well

this is what had happened to me several times. Friday evening my PC and Live stoped working, and I had to wait till Monday, so I spent 2 unproductive days waiting for Ableton to respond. In some cases wait was even longer.
Aslo - joining domain should not affect Live licensing. I also noticed that I have lost all my VSTs, and this is even worse because I would have to probably reinstall all plugins. Crazy !!!

AFAIK you can authorize Live with the offline method and backup the 'authorizationfile.auz' that way you can replace your HDD and once Live is reinstalled just double click that file, done Live is authorized without having to email Ableton and wait for monday, Unless the HDD replacement change your Live's hardware code (that's something I'm not sure), but if on changing HDD Live's hardware code remains the same you can use that file!

The title of this thread is what's going to get me committed, not Live's authorisation process.
