IPad controller apps (list them!)
Not to add to all the hype or anything, but i had to come here to try and get some answers, cause not too many people have an idea of what I'm looking for.
So Im playing with the iPad here at work and I'm really curious about trying to use it to control Live, although it's really hard to understand how some of apps that are already out, control Live. This is the one thing that is keeping me from really diving into buying iPad. I'm just really curious, cause I'm going on tour soon and would like to be able to use it while playing live. I've read the other topics that some have posted on here about iPad apps, but it's not clear how users have utilized the apps, so i was hoping that people could list any and all apps here and give us a quick review and run down of how they used it and the pros and cons. Also, is there any app that would let you design your own interface?
Basically what I'm looking to use it for is to launch clips and also to control faders and the crossfader from one page. I don't want to have to switch "pages" in order to get to a different control, but be able to just create and edit a control surface.

Midipad seems really like something that would benefit me in my usual set up, although it's not available. I just wanted to see what other apps users have tried and liked.
List them up!

It sounds like what you want is Touch OSC.
http://hexler.net/software/touchosc
You build your own controllers using the touch osc editor, then upload that to your iPad, phone, touch.
There's good tutorials on the website.
I'm using it on my iPad with Live 8.1.3 rc, rock solid, latency seems comparable to any USB midi controller.
You DO need something to convert the OSC messages to midi, Im using Osculator, pretty quick to program it how you want.

I got touchosc, osculator, and live running today on the iPad and it rocks. Super easy to setup and customize. As stated above, the latency isn't bad either.
Re: IPad controller apps (list them!)
I don't have an iPad yet but when I do I'm going to need threads like this because iTunes is doing a piss poor job of separating iPad apps from iPhone apps other than 1 page that looks like it's just a short list of what Apple deems as cool.

Super easy like it only took 3.5 days? Or super easy like it took mere minutes?digitalrust wrote:I got touchosc, osculator, and live running today on the iPad and it rocks. Super easy to setup and customize. As stated above, the latency isn't bad either.

^I've got my money on that app right there. Of course, it's prolly going to be as horridly convoluted as TouchOSC. Though this does sound promising:
The striking feature of midipad is its ability to directly communicate via network-MIDI-protocol. So there is no need to install any communication-peer-software on the Mac! Simply plug-and-play via Apple Bonjour - wireless. This kind of connectivity has not been used in any similar iphone-software
The problem with TouchOSC is that it's so mind numbingly designed for programmers. I want to buy, spend 5.6 sec setting up, and start fucking playing. I don't want to have to grab this, grab that, tweak this, adjust that, spend HOURS on a fucking geekfest forum in order to find that I needed yet ANOTHER script or whatever. Jesus. There's already arguing that the Python remote script isn't necessary. lol.
I'm open to being wrong, however.

For me, it took 2-3 minutes, because it is exactly like using this combo of apps on the iPhone/touch.LoopStationZebra wrote:Super easy like it only took 3.5 days? Getting this working truly is simple, as in a few minutes, at least on OS X.
From what I understand, setup is bit more complex on Windows, but still should be fairly simple.
As far as building your own custom layout using the Touch OSC editor, that's always going to take time to program just by nature. If you don't want that, just wait for midipad or one of the mackie control style applications.

Re: IPad controller apps (list them!)
it's not that tricky to program. Man up!
the clear advantage of midipad is that the names of the clips are displayed on the screen. This alone makes it a better choice than an APC, launchpad or TouchOSC. But it needs to be skinnable. Can you imagine staring at that white screen in a dark club? talk about sun blind!

Is that a joke? He's talking about the controller, not the sounds.weak- i could make that sound with absynth and a couple mouse clicks.not impressed.next.
I hope JazzMutant breaks down and decides to release the Lemur software for iPad. I know they've said they're not planning to yet, but, seriously... they already have the cross-platform editors, scriptability (that might violate app store rules unfortunately...) it will take a while for another company to catch up with what the Lemur software is capable of doing.
