If jazzmutant had any sense, they'd be onto this in a flash. It'll kill their existing business, but if they don't release it, someone else will.

All of the current designs look insanely wide of the mark. A simple launchpad style interface with visual feedback is all that's required, all the other controls (faders, rotaries etc) work badly on a touchscreen so why bother?

As much as we would all love to see a cheap lemur killer app I think we are a far way off between what is currently available and what a lemur can do when you dig deeper. It's not just a clip grid/fader/knob box. For one thing I don't see anything currently available for the iPad using the physics engine. If your finger isn't on it then shit ain't moving.

And if Jazzmutant refuses to do anything for the iPad they'll do their best to stay at least one step ahead of the competition in functionality, but if this drives a development race then there's nothing wrong with being a step or two behind Jazzmutant at all times. A year from now there will probably be an iPad app that does everything the Mu lemur Ableton interface can do now….but Jazzmutant will be putting out better things at that point too.

But wait for it....you will be able to stream netflix movies on it, a different movie in each clip box.

Lemur is expensive, but it's hardly over-priced. There's alot of high-tech in that box, and it's been around for how long now ? it's only now that anyone is even making any kind of headway in catching up, subsidised by arguably one of the largest computer/media manufacturers on the planet using technology jazzmutant pioneered in the first place.

Now the monome on the other hand - is clearly over-priced.
A couple of coy, patchouli wearing vegans taking dutch angle photos of their button matrix.
Genius...here, have $2k. Please send me a custom ink print with my buttons.

I do like that the Lemur had that price reduction. And the fact that their new overlords make touch screens for drone missle system controllers is hot and should keep Lemur in business for a little while longer at least.

But when the killer controller app is released for the HP Slate, it's all over.

Akai's SynthStation for the iPhone/iPad is already showing off Lemur-like physics capability:

It doesn't seem that far off to me looking at all the apps already coming out and being worked on.

On the TouchOSC front:
LiveControl (TouchOSC edition)
http://monome.q3f.org/wiki/LiveControl_TO
"a fork of the LiveControl project for TouchOSC giving full automap features to the ipod touch and ipad"

TouchOSC/Python project for iPad
http://marshall-law.co.nz/touchoscipad/
"The final product will look very similar to the new Lemur Ableton template: but using TouchOSC and the iPad. It will have basic automapping faders and whatnot: and a clip grid (with names) not dissimilar to the APC40."
On their todo list is "Get a copy of the Lemur Mu template running, so I can purloin ideas and potentially code if they’re releasing the Python Max/MSP side of things OSS."

On the non-TouchOSC front:
midipad and MxNM both of which look like they have a Launchpad-style 8x8 grid that instantly maps to session view.

And then there's monome emulation on the iphone/ipad to run all the monome apps:
iPhone Monome
http://iphonemonome.sourceforge.net/
Open source monome emulation created with MAX/MSP and the application Remokon for the iPhone.
