Seattle is pretty bad that way usually. We get maybe 3-4 for a solo act or one to two guests per member for a four piece band. If you're a big draw they don't care, or if your band tends to have a heavy drinking crowd they don't care. It's not as bad as LA or anything, but they worry about ticket sales. Lots of clubs, fickle crowds that stay home if it's raining etc. With that in mind, (and the fact that I'm sure the Orb guy is drawing all Tarakiths friends into the pest list) I try to pay the door for friends and ex bandmates I've known for 15+ years much less a guy I've chatted with mostly online. :)

The show is Saturday at Chop Suey, 9-10, opening for Luisine, Shen, and one of the guys from The Orb. Live workshop from 6:30-8:30 at Electric Tea Garden that day too btw. The decibel guys are throwing this event and the workshop if you need to google for more info.
Luisine + 1/2 The Orb? Awesome man 8) Hey you never know though -- They too might be in the same boat :?: :D

If I use Logic and it crashes. Damn, not happy (flock Apple), but within 30 seconds I can reboot and keep plugging away.

If I use an app designed from day one as a live performance app and even called LIVE and it crashes while I'm playing live in front of an audience through no fault of my own, that's a completely different story.

Tarekith wrote:My solution is that Ableton needs to HIRE more testers than they have currently. People PAID to put this software through it's paces more fully than the developers have been before it's released. I GET that it's not an ideal situation right now, and that they can't predict every use people will put the software through. But I still think that they need more effort on their end to solve these problems, and not put that burden on their end users.
I've worked as a software & hardware tester for EA, Sega and more recently Rockstar video games
and I started in the game by developing the OSX standards testing at EA so i think my opinion on development pipelines is ok.

Ableton could get a lot of help with this if they thought about it and offered some compensation for the work they require.
I am sure that there are enough very useful people around here that would be willing to help out.

Business is business but it still amazes how often software companies fail to support the quality assurance (testing) departments.
It is so common for programers, artists and producers to walk around like little Hitlers and treat the QA peeps like dirt.
Its astounding how many business professionals dont understand the importance of longterm strategies and the meaning of the word 'sustainability'.
Ableton made its name by thinking differently so get your business department to do the same.

I guess the moral of this story is that its an industry problem so ableton is pretty good in that respect
BUT ... its not cheap and I hope they remember how they got to where they are now.

in the meantime, i'm curious if anyone has come across these 8.1.1 issues in 8.1.3beta:

1. in certain situations MIDI-triggered recording causes Live to crash
2. pops recorded into audio files at repeat bar-line when recording in arrangement view
3. occasional loud pops on clip fades when using reverb plugins
4. while MIDI-triggered recording in session view: pops in master output at end of bar (but not recorded into audio file)

ta! zoe
I want to try some of these things also. When you say "MIDI-triggered recording" do you mean clip play started with the track already armed by an external controller-- in other words, hitting a button on your FCB1010 to start play with track armed?

if they're going to be paying for beta testing I'd like a retro-active payment for the last 2 years

Ableton employees can be bribed with beer, you should definitely try it sometime. And on that note:

Abes should use Ablepoints and do something like one bugreport=one point, X# point x% in upgrades or in the apparel store or somethimg and the users can be estimulated and is a win win deal

You know, I actually think this is a good idea. I suppose it would have to be per new and confirmed bug though. Else some buggers (sorry!) would send in a lot of bogus bug reports or simply re-report well-known bugs. But still. Or they could have some sort of competition scheme. I've dabbled a bit with surveys and it's not uncommon to hand out cheap lottery tickets or stuff like that to people that returns a completed survey within a certain time frame.

EDIT
Obviously not an alternative to good internal QA. But you can never capture everything with internal testing, public betas are still important.

MIDI-triggered recording refers to MIDI clips that send notes via the IAC driver back into Live...in order to start and stop recording clips.
So I launch a MIDI clip, and it in turn launches a batch of timed events.

2. pops recorded into audio files at repeat bar-line when recording in arrangement view
Here's a recent example of the seriousness of this problem:

A few weeks ago I was asked to make an all cello version of the Breaking Bad theme (it'll be Episode 6 of this season). Time was short (i.e. a few hours), so I decided to record in Live 8.1.1 because its faster for me to work in than Logic (and easiest for me to control with my feet).

I recorded the whole thing and was mixing down. Everything was great until I realized that EVERY SINGLE AUDIO FILE had a *POP* at the repeat barline (for ease of work, I'll set a section of the arrangement view to loop while I'm recording).

I HAD TO RECORD ALL THE TRACKS AGAIN and wished I'd done it in Logic.

So I want to know if this problem is fixed.
