new challenge for producers
Think this is a nice challenge: producers contest. A little bit more of a challenge than the usual remix contest. I found it over here: http://funkerman.com/contest and am making something myself in ableton right now. thought i'd share this with you if someone's interrested
cheers!

I agree competitiveness is a key to success, so the more such events we have, the better quality of producer's work we'll see

I'd enter more of those contests if my work didn't become the property of the record label.
Perhaps something along the lines of - it becomes our property but we can't do anything with it unless the original author and the remixer are in agreement - would make more sense.

I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

Well i think that's not entirely true. The contest only gives you a vocal track. If you were to strip these vocals from your production, would the label still be able to claim it? It would be an original work by you, with yourself having the samples and instruments..

yeah,
but, they own the track with the vocals, meaning they could release it if they wanted to and you don't get squat if they don't want to pay you.
The terms are a joke and I would wholeheartedly recommend that no-one enter as it's so skewed in the labels favour. . .
It's a shame as this is becoming more prevalent and I understand that there is a need for protection and control for the original artist and the rights owners however it's a f*cking screw for anyone who enters.
I know that it's just a contest but by the same token you are signing the rights away to a piece of your work with no remuneration plus the label can effectively do with the work what they wish and they owns all the rights?
ha ha, pretty good scam!

@tw1nstates: Man you're making quite a point there.. I'll go ask this guy called Funkadelic. Last time, he won the second prize, which only was a release on the label. I wonder what he got for his production..
Extra new: Funkerman (the host) will be remixing the winning entry. Guess he is free to do that without asking the participant..

Hey Aron,
Well, yeah, that's intersting, so basically they get to release stuff, with no negotiation as to points / usage / rights etc and possibly don't even have to pay you a royalty.
The last one I can't believe though. . .
