making warp markers snap to beginning of audio file

so this has been bugging me about live 8 for a while now and i'm wondering if anyone knows a work-around. i often divide long tracks into several smaller clips, generally 4-32 bars long. when i bring in anything over 16 bars, however, live places warp markers in the clip at odd places. i then have to go through and place warp markers at the beginning and end of the clip and erase the rest. the problem with the new warping function is i have to drag the first warp marker to the right, go in and manually place one at the beginning of the sample, drag it to the '1' so the clips starts on the 1st beat. even when doing this, i often miss the true beginning of the sample and have to zoom even further in to place the warp marker.

so, my question is this- is there a way to snap the beginning of the clip to the first beat on the warping grid without having to do it manually? or is there a way to automatically place warp markers at the very beginning or end of the clip so i can at least drag truly the first/last part of the sample to where i need it to be? it really annoying to have to keep zooming in and moving warp markers just so i can start at the beginning of the clip.

I don't know if this would be helpful at all but this is usually how I start out with warping anything:

1. the markers might already be there, I ignore them for a moment, find the first beat, double click that spot to create the marker. I right click that marker and set it as 1.1.1. Then I zoom in, hold that marker, while holding SHIFT and drag left and right to eye up exactly what part of the waveform should fall upon that spot on the grid.

2. I hit Ctrl+A (Select All) and hit backspace (delete all the other markers).

I've found this to be my quickest method so far. From that point on, it is all up to how you like your markers.

The reason why I don't like to delete all the other markers first is because for some reason, when there is only one marker in the entire track, holding shift and moving the marker seems to drift?? (I guess it is a bug??). The drifting at times even results in radically throwing the marker off into a netherworld of 123243.2.1 or whatever, not pretty. So I make sure there are other markers present when I set my 1.1, and then once it is pinpointed, delete the rest to do my other stuff

okay, so it sounds like you're doing it the same or similar to the way i'm doing it. it seems like there should be an easy way to just have the 1st marker be a) the VERY beginning of the sample and b) on the first beat. i was hoping ableton thought of that, but it sounds like they didn't.

also, when i do this sometimes, the end of the sample seems to end up like 100 something measures away, which is also annoying. also, i feel like i shouldn't have to zoom way in just to be able to correctly place my first or last marker. when i do it from a zoomed-out view, it NEVER lands on the beginning/end of the sample, always a little before/after. annoying!

i understand the new warp marker setup and why it is that way, its just less usable FOR ME the new way because of this.

If you want, you can disable "auto warp long samples" in the preferences.
You will still have to manually warp it, but it will be much easier from a blank slate than with all those warp markers in place.

Also, when you're placing warp markers, you can right click anywhere and choose "Set 1.1.1 Here" which is useful sometimes.
