I have specific problems around the 117 Hz area. To compensate, I just put an EQ on the master and dipped it about 4,5 dB, when I am mixing. But it's still a big problem when I'm recording in that room. Somebody told me it's also because I don't have much on the walls yet (book shelves, posters, etc).
I think I do need some acoustic treatment, but I'm not sure what to invest in... I don't want to just buy some bass traps to put them up, to find out, it's not helping in that specific frequency range. Will it really make a difference? Is there a do-it-yourself way to find out if that's the way to go?

To the OP:
Even treated the room will have lots of variation in response and the phrase "flat" is relative. A well treated room sounds "good" most places in the room, not flat. In other words treating makes your room well behaved. Look at the frequency response of the room across the entire spectrum not just the bass response. You can adjust with an equilizer for your specific location but moving your ears just an inch or two can give you as much as a 4 dB change in different parts of the spectrum. I like using headphones for frequency specific monitoring and then the monitors for spatial monitoring. Just my $0.02.
