Wow, nice. 33%? I had 49% on my 2.8Ghz MBP. But then again, I had 67% on my 2.16 and somehow you had 57%?Tarekith wrote:Ran a quick set of tests to get a real world comparison with the old laptop, pretty much on track with what Apple was advertising in terms of CPU increase.
Bouncing a 45 minute long album in Logic, which had a TON of Logic plug ins and over 135 stereo tracks:
- 2.16gHz core2duo MBP = 22:38 minutes
- 2.66gHz i7 MBP = 8:38 minutes
My Ableton Live PA project, average CPU reading:
- 2.16gHz core2duo MBP = 33%
- 2.66gHz i7 MBP = 16%
Live 8 Performance Test:
- 2.16gHz core2duo MBP = 57%
- 2.66gHz i7 MBP = 33%
Converting a 24/96 wav file to 320kbps MP3:
- 2.16gHz core2duo MBP = 1:15 minutes
- 2.66gHz i7 MBP = 45 seconds

Because I don't have the fatest CPU from the last product line.#1thelark wrote:WTF why don't they compare the fastest cpus of each product line?
Glitchrock - no idea why we get different results, I just follow the instructions the same way I wrote them. Different soundcards?

It is just a brand name = pure marketing BSd-track wrote:but..for real
can anyone explain why call a company their laptop "Pro" in 2010 with a c2d 2.4 ghz 3mb cache and 5400 rpm hdd, glossy display, without bluray, ssd and hdmi ? cant get it.
not to mention the price - but i accept that apple is apple
what is "Pro" in it?
Apple's laptops have been moving away from "pro" features towards consumer features for some time now. They know which side their bread is buttered on.
The majority of people buy them because they like the operating system &/or appreciate good design & relatively high quality goods, not because they are doing "pro" work.
I'm not seriously bashing Apple, I've been using their computers for around 15 years, but I have watched the trends.

I've been saving $$$ for this thing since 2006. Shit you not. I'm halfway considering waiting until a real quad-core comes out, but I'll likely cave-in and buy a 17" matte really, really soon. I've been holding out for too long. I'm still on Tiger for christ's sake. I'm going nuts over here!evileye wrote:Were do you guys get the cash? do you lot use the credit option? or are some of you selling drugs
i would love one even the 15 inch i5 would do me. I'm so jealous

So, did you stay with the stock HD and RAM?Tarekith wrote:Got the i7 15", regular screen.
Re: New MacBook Pros Released today??
Yeah, 500GB is more than enough for me. My last one was a 320, and even then I was barely filling it up. 4 GB of RAM is like-wise fine with me. I use Menu Meters to keep an eye on my RAM and CPU useage in real time. I rarely go above 1.8GB used, so having 4 is good enough for me.
Great laptop though, I really like the new unibodies a lot. Things feel solid, no give or wiggle of parts, just solid aluminum. I definitely feel a lot more comfortable taking this thing out live than the last one. Not that it was bad, but this feels more road worthy. It's thinner, but wider and longer, so it definitely feels bigger than the last 15" I had. Almost like a small 17" laptop. Maybe it's just me.
Quick though, been using it for some mastering sessions this afternoon and it's definitely sped up the workflow. Lot less waiting now.

I just envy how you sick fu*kers will be able to load whole Live Sets into RAM if you want. Maxed out here on 3GB (Dec 2006 MBP), with a gigging set containing 3.5GB of clips.

* MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
Forgetting about price and not really caring about screen size, if you HAD to own one of these configurations JUST to run your live sets from (perhaps using reason as well), including Live Synths, Loops, Real-time vocal processing and using the APC40 with a view to go gigging with it - what system would you choose? A or B?
A, 13" MB PRO, 2.66 (dual), 8 GB RAM, 128SSD
or
B, 15" MB Pro, 2.66 (i7), 4 GB RAM, 500 gb 5400rpm
Would be interested to hear your answers...Cheers!
