How does Groove extraction work?

Heya,

I know how to extract a groove - not after ableton instructions.

Just wondering what elements of an audio sample are analysed to create the groove, is it just timing?

I want to make templates for all the swing settings in my hardware - thought I could simply use a rimshot on every 16th, but I'm not sure if if the extraction process incorparates volume/velocity/accent and/or even timbre of a sound ie. the difference between a kik, snare or hat.

If someone knows - pls let me know - I need to get started....

pretty sure it's based solely on the transients' placement and volume. don't think it takes frequencies into account.
