Create playlists and smart playlists.

I don't like when you can't fit the whole library on the device. Also by being able to do so it's yet another backup if your computer craps out.
Not sure if that works. Everytime Mrs. Neb has switched computers, her iPod wipes itself with a new sync. This only works when you can just drag and drop the mp3 files, and the player does not require proprietary software to transfer.

Question for those in the know: Ipod Touch vs. Iphone vs. regular Ipod for music? (Forget about drive size for now) Can the
Iphone do everything the Ipod Touch can?

beats me wrote:I think part of the problem is that the drives on portable media players are still relatively small compared to our ever growing libraries. I don't want a device where I have to pick and choose what I put on it because the drive can't handle it. That right there is some bullshit. A lot of times I have no idea what I'm going to be in the mood to listen to later so sometimes I'll just scroll through artists and come across something I completely forgot about and am in the mood for. Other times I'll just pick a genre.

So in the world of "I want control and options" small drives are the asshole in that scenario regardless of manufacturer.
I agree but the iPod that I originally mentioned that got run over while skating was a shuffle and only held a gig. I bought the Sanza that was 2 gigs and since it has an expansion slot I was able to put in a 2 gig card thus bringing the total up to four gigs. When searching for songs the difference (onboard vs. micro SD) is seamless.

4 gigs is a lot of music.

Do iPods have expansion slots yet? 8O

I had actually forgot about that cool feature.
*plans to kiss Sanza upon next reunion*

Thats why I like this forum. Its a great place to reminded about shit I already know.

My head is too fried to do the math right now but do you guys share a computer or library or whatever? I haven't had any issues but all my devices and computers have been exclusively mine…and all Apple.

One of the things I love about iTunes is I have it on my MBP in my bedroom, Mac Mini in the living room, and my roommate has it on his PC in his bedroom. All libraries can be streamed wirelessly to all the computers in different rooms so there's no need for us to transfer files using external devices or burn CDs. This saves tons of time when you live in a constant "hey check this out!" household.

8O I don't know how to respond to that. I think my grandmother has more than 4 gigs of music.

she had an ipod, but all our computers are PCs, so it's prolly another way for apple to screw us, because itunes never works intuitively.

and 4gb isn't very much. My music library, which start at 192kb encoding and is nowadays at vbr0, is around 300gb and growing fast.

As for who start which war first, all I did was say how I preferred windows apps...apparently with enough truth that it got all your iPanties in a twist. But hey, I'm not whining about it...you guys want a fight, I'm game. Bring it.

I tell ya what, respond to this instead:

Thats the beauty of my scenario and your last comment... I can take that same 4 GB player when I get home today... swap out the Micro SD and it could be 10 gigs, 16 gigs... or more...

No it doesn't but until you can expand one to 200+ gigs (maybe you can?) then that's a big fail for me too. Another reason I won't buy an iPod Touch is because the current drives max out at 64 gigs which is a big joke, especially considering the price tag....and that you are supposed to be able to watch videos on it and vidoes have a lot larger file size than music.

^ well (I can't believe I'm saying this) in Apple's defense, I don't think the intention is for you to constantly be walking around with every bit of media you have... hence syncing it with you computer. Think about CDs in the car or movies at the house... you watch/listen to what you have for a while then you swap em out and maybe back in again later.

Still, 64 gigs isn't much "for the price" as you said.

Pfft. Non-Apple mp3 players are nothing more than grubby little whore devices that take at least 5 iterations before they finally become even remotely playable. lol. Christ, that fucking little Sanza. The first several versions were so horrid with freezes and whatnot that SanDisk had to hire former Blackwater soldiers to stand guard outside the Corp HQ because of all the death threats, lol. The one redeeming feature was the FM tuner, but even that was only capable of picking up a lone Spanish language station out of Tuscon.

By the time all these other manufacturers get a product that's stable, Apple has again emerged with a new device that dominates the market.

What's you talking about? To me the whole point of portable media players is to have your whole library on you at all times. I spend a lot my time paranoid about "shit happens". It's a great comfort to me that if my apartment burns down or gets broken into I have my iPod on me which has my entire library on it. Good luck getting insurance to rebuild your media library or even remembering everything you have.

It's also saved my ass a couple times at DJ gigs because I couldn't possibly burn every song I own on to CDs without also renting a lift gate truck to transport it all.

And I do believe in the conspiracy that all hard drive manufactures and devices that use them aren't making any big leaps in the size department while they still have a lot of unsold units out there. Shit, I still see 40 gig drives available NEW. WTF? Probably a sound business decision but still pisses me off.

But as you pointed out, we see different needs/advantages and disadvantages.
