I had a d50 but it was defective... I'd try again someday, because it did sound really good, it's just that one of the channels had a much lower output, and was really noisy.
The h4n internal mics sound fuller than new sony dcm m10 to me, though both are lacking high end detail. (If you want decent internal mics AND good input options)
The D50 would be my top choice in the price range still, if all you needed was internal mics.

Another vote for the Zoom H4n. Internal Mics + 2 mic/line inputs for quad recording, or recording gigs as 2 lines from the desk + 2 ambience/audience.

+1. Very good sounding Mics...Would be great if you could dump the memory straight to a USB stick though.. We record all our band rehearsal with this thing but means having a computer so everyone can get copies on the night etc...Minor details though!Pitch Black wrote:Another vote for the Zoom H4n. Marantz PMD 661 is what I settled on after quite a bit of research.
Excellent build quality, suitable for professional field work, and really quite good built-in mics.
Zooms are great, but they aren't nearly as durable or reliable, and the mics aren't all that good for quiet sounds; they also don't have actual gain controls or accurate meters. Deal breaker. The H4n is better, but still not as well designed, in my opinion.
The Sony's are alright, but by comparison, the Marantz is built like a tank, while still being small and light.

He specifically needed a field recorder with quality internal mics though, and the Marantz 661 is noisy and colored in that department. I have an HD-P2, but I wouldn't recommend it for it's internal mics.LP wrote:Marantz PMD 661 is what I settled on after quite a bit of research.
