Ableton with Fruity Loops

Post by taikowaza » Fri Apr 08, 2005 3:15 pm

Just switched from Live on OSX (powerbook 867 12inch) to a desktop AMD 64 3200+ 160GB 512MB new at circuit city for $550. Best thing I ever did, can't believe I waited so long, discovering a whole new world of creativity etc, holds no interest for those already in the know.
(dedicated mac user who has seen the light).
But I digress. I have discovered fruityloops 5 since my epiphany and WOW i like what I see. running it as a vsti in live seems like a nice match. I am having trouble playing the FL instruments in step sequencer while running it as a plugin in live 4. any advice re. routings? etc?>

another question, since I have switched to PC I cannot reactivate my antares plugins, i downloaded the newest interlok drivers however can't get live to recognize them. advice? merci mes amis

If you want to get some free software for your PC try GIMP - a Photoshop like app but absolutely free.

Hmm... I have't had problems like this. You need to make sure your MIDI clock is synced correctly in the FLStudio options.

Ableton with Fruity Loops

Post by taikowaza » Sun Apr 10, 2005 1:15 am

Thanks for the tip, however I still cannot get fruityloops to play properly with my Midi Keyboard in live.
This is a demo version, perhaps that is one of its limitations, however I had been told that it should work as a full version for a limited time.
I am sending MIDI signal to the fruity vsti, midi is registering in FL, I can even see the keyboard keys moving, however there is no sound.
When I start live, the sequence runs and I can hear the plugin fine-
however everytime I touch the keyboard there is no sound.
It's been a bit frustrating so any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
sincerely

Ah! So you're getting MIDI, just not audio back into live, sounds like. The track you're using FL as input to, this is an *armed* audio track?

Thats funny your going to Fruity Loops and I am moving away from it completely. I used FLP for years. It was sweet but I never got that sound I wanted untill I started using Ableton and PTLE on the Apple.

THanks for your posts guys-
funny how I am moving towards FL and you are going the other way,
but I must say, that sound is not the only important thing- groove is also a very subtle element of an instrument. The feel of FL is fantastic, the timing is spot on. As a percussionist I can really feel the timing, and FL is really groovy! The sounds also seem great.
Other plugins like Antares FIlter, while excellent, needs a groove setting or something, it seems to robotic for me right now. ALthough linking it to an ableton track using a swing quantise works well!
My question remains- still no possibility of playing fl studio instruments via my midi keyboard. Midi lights up in FL studio, I can see the piano roll moving, the virtual key gets pressed in fl studio (so midi IN works fine), and audio out works fine back to live for step sequencer events, but there is no communication when I hit they key! crazy. I have been searching the web, most people seem to have no problem, however there are a few complaints scattered around...can someone with FL forum access check for me? I purchased fl producer's edition but I have not received it yet. I really hope that some FL Studio users can use it in live 4 with their Midi keyboards with no problems! let me know>?
also, do you use it in vsti or rewire? finally, any timing issues?

Ok, so I tried a little something, here's what I tried:

Started Live.
Started FL, comes up in rewire mode.
Set audio 1 live track input from FLStudio. Set Monitor to 'On" (or can also arm track).
Press key on virtual keyboard on FL studio instrument, get sound into live.
Set MIDI track 3 input to computer keyboard
Set MIDI track 3 in Live to output to FL Studio.

Then switch via rewire button to FL studio screen view, press computer key, works fine. Should work the same if you set MIDI track input to your ext. kybd.

Live & fruity tips:

rewire sub channels
firstly remember that once you have selected the rewire input onto a Live chanel ther is an extra dropdown so you can choose specific outputs .. such as Kick drum out of Fruity. It makes it a lot easier to break down the drums or mix them / whatever.

You can trigger patters in fruity from the session view so you can effectively have fruity drum patterns which are session clips. Also you can trigger fruity patterns off your keyboard so if Fruity pattern 1 is a hi hats pattern and fruity pattern 2 is kick and snare pattern . pressing C1 and D1 on your keyboard will give you a kick snare and hats pattern. combine these 2 keys into a Live session Clip and you see how it works.

I use FL 5 to produce studio tracks but since getting LIVE all my live sequencing is done in there. I've even found myself composing in LIVE. LIVE(rewire) + FL is not very stable. why don't you just bring in the FL vst plugins into live and sequence/play them from there?
