How to trance gate audio or midi? tremelo? in Ableton Live
I haven't figured out a way to set up a trance gate in ableton. This effect basically cuts up the audio in a specific rhythm by reducing the volume/amp at a certain rate, say 1/4 or 1/8 sounds good.
In Reason, I could set up an arpeg or 'the matrix' to ouput on/off CV signals to an audio or midi source's volume or amp and it would cut out the volume or reduce it at said rate.
I haven't figured out how to get the arpeg in ableton to do this to midi, and I can't apply this midi effect to audio waveform so i'm thinking I may need a 3rd party vst plug to do it? If so any recommendations?

Ok, here´s a trick: use the Auto Pan plugin from Live.
-Set the Phase knob to zero
-switch from Hz to note
-set Rate to 1/16 or 1/8
-play around with the Ammount knob.

Unfortunately, this will only get you quantized amplitude changes and not the grooved skipping done in most trance music. Good idea though.mr.adl wrote:Ok, here´s a trick: use the Auto Pan plugin from Live.

You could used the gate plugin sidechained to a hihat pattern.

Hmm but dummy clips or side chainig doesn't allow for rate changes :-/

A few dummy clips will DEFINITELY allow for a rate change. Just make a few different clips with the rates you use. You could even have a couple of long transitions programmed in as well as their components for improvising.Yamaz wrote:Hmm but dummy clips or side chainig doesn't allow for rate changes :-/

Instead of sidechaining to a hat, you could do it to a tone that has sharp attack/decay. You pretty much could do any pattern imaginable on the fly (especially if you add Arpeggiator to that with control of the Length).
I'd say the sidechained gate is the most flexible for quick improvising.
But for that pristine feel, I'd go for the dummy clips.

try 2x auto pans - one @ 1/16 and another one at something like 3/16 or 3/4 - something tripleteytlennon wrote:Unfortunately, this will only get you quantized amplitude changes and not the grooved skipping done in most trance music. This is correct. Use the gate effect and sidechain it to whatever rhythmic source you want. I'll usually just use a muted track with a rhythmic percussive sample (experiment, different transients will give you slightly different hits). You could used the gate plugin sidechained to a hihat pattern.
You can adjust the threshold, attack, and release times to taste. Throw a little rhythmic delay on there and you're g2g.

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot about my post, doh! Still having the same problem and it seems like sugarbytes effectrix is the only thing I've found that does what I want but I'm lookin for a way to do this in ableton native if I can. The issue is that I want to be able to change the rate at which the gate occurs and do so in realtime....using sidechain to a hi hat or dummy clips or volume envelope doesnt allow me to change the rate so that I can get a bouncy ball slowing down or speeding up style gate?
Thx!

If your sidechain source is a hihat sample, load it into a drumrack or impulse and put an arpeggiator on the track. Then you could adjust the arpeggiators rate. You may have to nudge the timing of the hits a little bit.
