i'd go one step further and have full customisation, so that the macro panel could be a direct replica of your control surface....or even multiple control surfaces if that's what you wanted. I'd also like this to have layers, so that the macro map could control even more than the one set of parameters.

8 isn't enough at all, at ALL. I'd like to see an option where you can choose how many macro buttons you want. 0-?
I'd also like to see cross track/rack macro controllers. So you can have one for all.

For those of you with Max for Live, Hoffman2k's snapshotmorpher/16 macros is a good way to get what you want (both more than 8 macros and assigning controls from other tracks).
The only problem is you can't access controls from inside racks (so you can't layer instruments and have more than 8 macros), but it's still cool, especially for group tracks (16 macros has an audio effect version).
