Importing "sliced" songs as opposed to whole ones

Post by rengel » Tue Apr 12, 2005 3:47 am

All,

I finally worked out the whole warping thing last night, which is fantastic, LOVE EVERY PIECE. :)
Now, I want to start getting a little more creative, and instead of simply mixing from track to track, I'd rather loop a couple of favourites sections out of a track and stick a bassline onto that, then play the remainder of the song, etc..

Now, is the best approach to do this:

A) import the song (as a whole) and loop sections of it in live orl
B) import the track but pre-sliced up.

If I were to import it using the B method, would I drag all the cut-ups onto Track 1 or Track 2?

Still a bit lost on this one.. would love some tutorials/help guidance..

Cheers guys

P.S - I'm sorry tohave to bring up "Sasha" again, but I've listened to his kiss100fm mix he did in january, and then I listened to the original track that he used. In his mix, the song that he uses he doesn't play Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 in that order, he plays Part 3 (with some freaky filter) then Part 1, Part 4, etc.. .looped, etc... and then once he's done this for a while, he'll play the song as a whole... Would it be better then to go for my option b if that's what I want???

Ralph.

First off, you could do what Sasha did (jumping around in a track) easily with either method A or B. Makes no difference, really.

For method A: You'll just bring the track in to the session view (Live's default screen) and then after you have warped the track copy and paste multiple instances on the same track (or channel). Set the clip to "legato" mode in each version, and make sure that the clip quantize is what you want - either 1 bar, 4 bars, global, whatever. Personally, I like having things in quarter notes or 8th notes with legato mode...

IF you have the memory to store a whole song in ram, set the track to "RAM" mode. That'll help your transitions.

Now, set the loop points differently for your track. Hit the "key" button (or "midi" button) on the top right of the screen and map the clips play buttons to different keys. Start playing and have fun.

With method B, you can do the exact same thing, but it's a two step process where you have to cut 'em up first, and once it's done you can't change your mind. It also takes up more hard drive space since you'll have a copy of the original track as well as the cut up copies.

I recommend method A.

Cool thanks for your reply :)
I'll give it ago over the weekend...
Not having done it before (cutting up or looping tracks) makes it a little hard to understand, but I get the logistics of it..

I.E - using markers to loop certain sections of a song..
Only thing is, let's say I've filled my Channel 1 with Track 1..
The first row has the whole track..
the second row has the intro to the whole track
the third row has the main part..
etc, etc...
How do I then trigger certain loops to work at certain times?
I can't click my mouse that quick! IS that where I need a midi controller or assign key's on my keyboard to trigger the squares?

I think I'll need some effects too, have to find somewhere to download these...

Yeah, mapping to a midi controller or keyboard is a lot easier than a mouse.

Well, to trigger loops, you use the quantize. You click the next loop whenever you darn well please, and it won't start until the next quantize point comes up. These points can be set globally or on a clip by clip basis. If you are looping LARGE sections of your track (ie 16 bars or something) then I take back what I said earlier about Legato mode - don't use it. If however you are looping two bar shots, then Legato mode is the way to go.

Look up the following things in your manual, it will really help you out:

Quantizing
Legato Mode
Ram Mode

Hope that helps.

good tips montreal - i agree for sure :)

rengel if you are looking for a controller keyboard maybe take a look at the photon 25 (cheaper now as they have brought out the photon x25) or the m-audio O2.. both these are ideal and may be about the size of thing you are after...

have fun!

Ok, I've done the following:

1. Imported a track and warped it.. [all good]
2. Hit the key button up the top right hand corner, and assigned y,l, p, etc for each track/clip.
3. I've attempted to loop, but can't get it goin.... I've dragged the 'brackets' that I can stretch from left to right on my clip, and then there's an 'arrow' which is where the loop starts from... isn't there meant to be an ending arrow too to finish the loop? or is that the end of the bracket?
4. Also, how do I stop a clip or track from playing? And can I have more than 2 audio tracks? I'd rather have..

Channel 1 and Channel 2 as being my DJ channels for importing entire songs, and then Channel's 3, 4, 5 for loops, basslines, drumbeats, cymbals, etc....
Or do I just put all my samples and loops (as well as other songs) into chanel's 1 and 2?

OK. I would suggest that you check your manual on something as elementary as how to add new tracks. It's easy.

Your idea to have whole songs in two channels and your 'supplemental' stuff in the other channels is a good idea. run with it.

For looping, make sure that "loop" mode is on in the clip properties. For this, you have to turn the warping on for the clip.
