You got it. Though a group could also have a sample sliced up over the 16 pads or a distinct sample on each pad etc. etc.

As far as I can tell, Groups are a way of sorting different elements of your track (drums, bass, lead etc.), and Patterns are contained within Scenes, sort of like clips in scenes in Live?
Groups are really just Kits, but they name them groups because they might have instruments or other non-drum samples in them, so technically a Kit is a type of Group, but basically a Group is your unit of 16 things that are triggered by the 16 pads.

A scene is just like a scene in Session View in Live, except the X/Y poles have been switched. But the Maschine "session view," called the arranger, works kinda differently, like you can't just drag clips around, you create one in a slot and then assign which pattern it will play.

patterns are, sure enough, the beat patterns you program/record that will then be played by the loaded Group.

No more than any software instrument. The one thing you seem to forget- hardware has issues, too. Most keyboards have more slop in turning on the last voice in an eight note chord than any latency you'll see in any software instrument. And God forbid if you exceed the hardware's polyphony...

What latency? Haven't had any issues at all.

YES there is latency :

It took me MORE THAN ONE YEAR to realise I needed this piece of gear.

(stuck in the holy faulty belief that all stuff that maschine allowed could be done in live, and, "why do the frak should I need something with such a dumbass name???")

8 groups of 16 pads embedding "sounds", a "sound" beeing either a sample or a loop, a multisample (slices on a keyboard), or a midi out...
4x64 patterns per group
and 64 scenes per project...

It's a bit difficult to grasp at first sight, but it opens a whole lots of possibilities, AND limitations too...

I'm still struggling to find THE way (for me) to use it the most efficiently for live shows purposes... because a "project" could be one song, but also a group of songs (8x16 sounds for a song is really too much for me). I'm progressing, and I'm gonna use 2 instances of maschine in a live setup, and "projects" that will be kinda 4-songs-blocks. I'll have to load other projects (4songs-blocks) on the fly just 2 or 3 times in a 1h30-2h00 live set (16-20 songs approx), loading a project can be a bit time taking and can also freeze live's gui while it is loading, so the less you'll have to load, the better it will be.

==> but for simple composition tasks... it's WIDE !!!

how do you guys think about using maschine for long live sets??

cheers

Been playing around with it for a few days now, still think sound design is a bit limited.
No velocity mixing\switching between multiple sounds on the same pad as far as i can tell.
But perhaps it's not fair to compare it to a rack stacked with parallel samplers.
But i love the stepsequencer, it's much more fun than drawing clips and works well with my hardware synths from within live.
So i have to agree:
MAschine made me rediscover Live, and Live increases maschine's power!
I also like the sound of the fx a lot, a smoother sound than ableton's.
Tried transferring sounds from my mpc3k, works but some samples are an octave to high or are repeated twice. Some sounds won't import because the sound name get's cutoff when saving to disk and you have to rename them to the name you see on the mpc.
Not much difference in sound, unless you switch to mpc60 which adds noise.
Lot's of fun and kills the launchpad!

not sure where you're getting your info from you keep posting incorrect info, maschine does have velocity switching of samples on 1 pad, actually 128 samples can be loaded on one pad if you choose, but most users would like an easier and more elegant way of layering samples than maschines current implementation. I'm just learning maschine my self and no expert but thats twice you've posted stuff that maschine does as stuff it doesn't do, just do a search on the ni forum there's alot of talk about the layering right now.

how do you manage to sequence hardware synthS from maschine sequencer WITHIN live??? I can sequence only ONE synth because of live's way to receive only a merged midi stream from all channels outputted by maschine...

I'm interested if you found a way to sequence multiple synths from maschine within live...

I thought this worked only with the slice tool, so you got to make a big sample then slice it to be able to "APPLY" the multi-slice to one pad??
is there a way to drag and drop single samples on one pad keyboard notes?

cheers

Sure is. Go into your map window and drag. The last sample dragged will cover up the samples underneath, so that's what you're probably seeing. If you set a different velocity range for each though, you'll see that they're all on the same pad.

This could be EXACTLY what I needed to solve a problem that I eventually solved with a SHIT-load of resampling and chopping. D'oh!

Guess i'm missing something here. When I grab multiple samples from the browser and drop them on a pad, only 1 sound is there (after adjusting velocity range in sampling --> map mode )
When I go into keyboard mode and hit velocity in upper left screen it's just showing that one sample on all layers as well.
It's just a regular drag-n-drop nothing fancy? thanks

Well I've had it for three days. My Verdict?

I'm blown away.

And I'm going to allow myself a "blown away" rant here because I know some people have been on the fence about this new gear, and also because of those "is it just for hip hop" posts....

so I'll say first and foremost, this thing is NOT just a hip-hop tool. It works for you, just like Live, and you can feed it anything. I make Industrial music and this thing integrates perfectly into my workflow. The included library is vast and top notch...and that's the LEAST of the reasons I bought it-- I immediatley set about making my DWIFH kits and drawing from my own sample library, easy as pie...and if the 16 pads/sounds per kit seems a limitation, it won't when you realize you can have 8 separate kits playing together, and switching between them is, again, easy as pie. The attention to detail in the real-time hands on control is incredible. Like being able to hold note-repeat and then hit buttons to change the note value immediatley, from repeated 1/16th to, say, repeated 1/64ths for a crazy snare transition, for example. Setting up FX and then mapping/controlling values via macro knobs, yup, easy as pie. And it feels totally natural to build a sequence in real-time, keep it playing, and then switch over to knob-tweaking for crazy mangling fx of your sequence, all performed in one recording take. it's soooo streamlined.

The most important thing though? It's the most PURE FUN i've had with new gear since buying Ableton Live. No joke.
