100% Crash. Easy Repro: Copy/Paste (CtrlC/Ctrl-V)

Post by Twigg » Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:03 am

Summary: There's a crash when you create a Midi Max patch with an assignable knob on it, followed by pressing Ctrl-C to copy a mdi clip from the midi channel, and then pressing Ctrl-M to goto Midi Map mode.

Setup
Running Live 8.1 and Max v1.2
PC Laptop, Core2 Duo, 3.5 gigs.

Steps:
1) Open blank new set
2) in the Midi channel provided, add a new Max midi patch.
3) In the Max midi patch, add a single live.dial and 'add it to the presentation' so that its potentially assignable. Save and close the Max Editor.
Alternatively I provided the test patch ...
Test Patch
4) Now back in Live, The midi channel should have a Max patch with a visible dial you could assign.
5) Double click anywhere in the midi channel to create an empty 1 bar midi clip.
NOTE: if you press the Midi Map Mode (Ctrl-M) at this point everything will still work fine.
6) CRITICAL STEP FOR FAILURE: on the midi clip you've created, click it to select and press Ctrl-C.
7) Regardless of pressing ctrl-v to paste, instead, press Ctrl-M (or the Midi map button). KABOOM. Crash everytime for me.

NOTES: If you use the mouse and hold Ctrl + Click and Drag the clip to do your copy, it will work.

1) Open up Live.
2) Assign any kind of Max midi effect patch to the midi track (even the step sequencer will do).
3) Double click on a slot in the midi track, then immediately hit control-c to copy it.
4) Click on the slot below and verify that control-v doesn't paste the clip.
5) Now click on the original clip again, press control-c again now followed by control-m.

That always results in a crash on my end.

Edit: The more I look at this the more convinced I become that this is more of a Live than Max bug. Not sure naturally, but Live itself is also acting very peculiar during those steps without using a M4L patch.
This is almost exactly what I described. For me it was absolutely necessary to have a Max Midi effect inplace otherwise there was no problem.

For me, this is a problem because I use things like Bomes Midi translator to translate midi keys into keyboard keys/macros. And one of the ones I used frequently was Copy/Paste. But I now depend on Max more than I depend on this copy paste routine, so I have to disable it for the time being and be VERY VERY careful never to copy and paste with the keyboard...

You say this is a live problem... I'm impressed with how Max works with Live, especially with viewing patches as they run. Its seamless to drill down. I can't think of a reason why copy and paste of a midi clip would even be interested in what kinds of effects are running down the chain. But I don't have the source in front of me and I trust you do. The callstack will reveal all ;)

Twigg's crash is reproducible here on Live 8.1.1, Max 5.1.3 on OSX 10.5.8.
(with any max midi effect device).
Doesn't happen if the clip you copy isn't on the same track as a guilty device.

Same bug if you're doing the same thing with a max audio device on a audio track...
or a midi one...

Ok, it's a huge bug!
My tongue spits english like a frog and my head is currently searching for a comprehensive language.
And I shit here

Does anyone know if this crash fix in v8.1.3 is related to this issue?
- Copying clips from tracks containing Max for Live devices which send getpath to live.object on a loadbang would crash Live.
