I don't live in the EU and I really don't have an answer as to why gas prices are high there and historically the response from the EU to American's outrage over rising gas prices has been "Oh you think that's high, do ya?.....", but I have heard that it wasn't until about the last decade that the general populous of the EU got inspired by our fat asses and felt the need for everybody to own their own car. Before then they were mostly content with public transportation, trains, and this thing they call "walking". So I'd have to say at least part of it is less demand means higher prices.Angstrom wrote: Oh, and note - in the UK our petrol (gas) is currently $7.75USD per gallon
prices across Europe are similar
am i the only one freaked out about the massive oil screwup?

Yep, we're to busy playing liberals vs. conservatives. Meanwhile the whole lot of us are getting fucked, every day, as usual.beats me wrote:Expect gas to be $4.00+ a gallon by mid summer. Of course this disaster doesn't justify that hike but they'll use it anyway and the ignorant public will just roll with it.

This is the ultimate failure of capitalism, but hey, nobody wants to look at alternatives, so this is the consequence, massive oil spills, mortgage crisis's leading to recession and war. We're not going out with a bang cold war style, but with a wimper serf/slav/slave mentality style.H20nly wrote: Much like the Gulf War and the War on Terrorism, its not about the oil, its about the money. As long as oil is worth more it'll keep getting pumped, despite the relevance or irrelevance of outdated technology like the internal combustion engine.
Gonna get a little hippy but some people think that at some point mankind will stop letting those in power dominate and destroy the planet with their greed, that there's going to be a paradigm shift in consciousness with the same sort of impact that the shift away from hunter gatherer had on people. That the owning class and governments will also realize that it's time to give people and the planet a break. It's a nice fuzzy thought.

You think there is less demand for cars in the EU?
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/tra_c ... ation-cars
Nope, the high pricing is mainly because of what you guys in America might call "Red Commie Socialist Statist Oppression". IE : taxes.
Our fuel is taxed more highly here, in fact it's 71% . Seventy One fucking percent.
You might think this feeds into some kind of utopian silver and gold public monorail system, turtle cuddling centres and herbal whole-earth windfarm crochet centres.
But no - it goes to support the usual shit.

Just kills me to think about all the wildlife that will suffer. But, then I like animals a lot more than stupid humans.

I'm just saying it's really convenient that we were just about to start drilling elsewhere again and this happens and there's no shortage of people who will benefit financially or ideologically from this disaster.ethios4 wrote:Do you think the 'splosion was planned or something?beats me wrote:Oh I don't think the timing is a coincidence.ethios4 wrote: I'm glad it at least happened before bills were signed allowing much more off-shore drilling.

I think it is too late for that.
Re: am i the only one freaked out about the massive oil screwup?
Is there any topic on this forum that doesn't somehow get parlayed into a discussion on Tod's sex life?
