Help setting up basic APC40 mapping

Post by immaxf » Fri May 07, 2010 6:33 pm

Hey all,
I'm struggling to settle on a good setup for my APC40. Essentially, I'd like to have a number of effects (let's say 8 to keep things simple) that I'd like to be able to apply to any track on the fly. So ideally, I could have beat repeat in my 1st device control, a compressor in my 2nd, limiter in my 3rd, etc. Then I could apply each of those effects to an individual deck/track as I see fit.

I can't figure out how to get anywhere close to this set up. For one, it seems impractical to have 8 return tracks, each with its own effect. Another problem is that when I try to map items in my device controller to certain effects, I can't seem to customize which channel is being mapped. Everything always just gets mapped to channel one, making it impossible for me to use more than one effect. How can I map to channels 2, 3, 4, etc?

I'm a very confused APC40 noob, so any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you know about macro controls and racks in ableton? They make things a lot easier for using the apc knobs the way you want and can control multiple instruments and effects. Doesnt answer all your question but its in the right direction. p204 ableton manual, also a good video tut if you havent seen it in live lessons.
