@rompling

To access the M4L demo:
1 Install maxforlive from here
2 In Live, go into options\preferences\user account licenses and switch "show all products at startup" to yes.

Sorry, but this is not true !
The actual price only for a Max runtime is 0$ at the moment.

If I would follow your argumentation and substract the 200$
for Pluggo we should all ask for a M4L FULL VERSION without
content for 100$ !

But nobody does. And nobody asks for a FREE M4L runtime (I
wouldn't mind if it was free...). Paying 100$ seems quite
fair to me.

I don't care about Pluggo, what I am really interested in is
the user library. So yes, 100$ for a runtime without Pluggo
would still be ok for me.

@twisted-space

I installed it some time ago. maybe I need a more up to date version.

The Plugo stuff all works, just can't look at the patches in the editor.

Did you succeed in opening the max editor in demo mode?

It's not strictly true of course, but you only have to look at the pricing concessions being made and the included content to realise that a non-editable runtime isn't on the cards. People claim they would be happy to pay $100 for a non-editable runtime, under the premise that they are not programmers. Fine, then they should be happy to know that included with M4L is at least $200 worth of content.... So save your pennies for longer. Problem solved. And you're not left with a 'crippled' M4L as a result.

Alternatively, forget about the Pluggo suite (as it's no longer available outside of M4L) and stick with Max4everything and pay $700.
As a non-programmer, stick with what's being made available for the max runtime.

simply wanting something does not always justify the getting of it.

Seriously, cycling74 could have asked people to own a max/msp/{jitter} license before allowing them a m4l license for an additional $100ish
Max Msp people would be saying to themselves ''hmmm, kool. live integration - sweet. Wanted this for ages''
Instead they don't make such requirements, dramatically cut the price, butcher an existing suite of plugs to include as content, and you still get all these cheapskates boohooing that it's not cheap enough. The irony of course being that everyone's willing to spend $100 on a 'runtime' because they're not into patch creation - which is approximately what it ends up costing when the value of the included content is subtracted.

Ok, I'm repeating myself now so I think there's not much more I can add to this argument, other than more repetition.

So with that all I can say is best of luck getting a M4L runtime! I'm not against it happening, not in the least. Just it seems very unlikely when you weigh in all the facts. If the currently included content could be prevented from being shared somehow, and your future requests for a M4L runtime involved a 'no included content' stipulation... then I'd say you have a better chance of success. Still, unlikely... they're bound to be losing some of the potential max/msp/jitter market to folks taking the much cheaper M4L route. They'll want to recoup those projected losses somehow, and that might very well mean no m4l runtime.

Max for live is supposed to invite to a lot of user made new functionality in Ableton Live, which is cool.

But where is all that nice user made functionality? I´ve done a search and I can´t find anything that looks particularly interesting, but I may not have looked in the right places.

How come Ableton don´t highlight all the new exciting functionality that the m4lcommunity may have come up with?

This far, the only thing I´m interested in that Max for Live offers, the step sequencer, seems a bit too expensive to me, 250 euro, ie the price for M4L.

i really like downloading things for reaktor! its totally fun, but a lot of time the devices are monstor and hard to figure out. It inspires me to "make music" pretty often.

a new maxforlive device would give a lot of users that similar spark when they get to try out something new and fun like the schwartz thing. Wouldn't use it every week, but i'd make a track around that for fun, absolutetly.

I'd love to have m4l stuff to play with but i have no desire to create content, only edit for my purposes as i'll need a year or two learning.

Please runtime please! It's such a great idea.

guys, mfl demo offers more functionality than max runtime, i.e. you can edit (but can't save still) .
runtime means just that - works only at runtime - no state saving between sessions.
