First I would recommend a good audio interface (anything that takes an XLR mic or 1/4 inch input, depending on how you want to record the guitar). Next, invest in an Art Tube MP pre amp (search for it on musicians friend).

If you want to record your guitar from an amp, I would recommend an SM 57 pointing right at the grill of the amp (make sure your levels are going in at about -6 to -12dB), there are tons of resources about recording guitar on the internet.

If you want to go direct, you should invest in a guitar amp simulator such as Amplitube or Guitar rig, these are both fantastic guitar amp emulators, and allow for "CD Quality Sound".

Oh yeah, make sure you have a decent guitar as well (American Strat, Gibson Les Paul, cheap guitar will get you a cheap sound).

thanks for the reply,
the audio interface i currently have is the firewire solo interface and i also use my zoom g2.1 effects pedals which have a built in interface as well as patches specifically for recording, guitars i have are a strat and an epiphone sg,i also have an fender precision bass but its the guitars im more concerned about at the minute.

ive recently invested in a new p.a so im not really pushed on buying any more new equipment unless its absolutely necessary.

when i do eventually get the recording to my liking what can i do, in simple terms to clean up the piece with the audio effects?
