Constant sample speed in Simpler?

Post by pina » Thu May 13, 2010 5:29 am

Say I drop a vocal sample into Simpler. With this mapped across my keyboard, as I play higher notes it plays the sample faster and as I play slower notes it plays the sample slower. Is there a way to make the sample playback speed constant while still effecting the pitch? So say the sample is three words. I want the speed of those three words being sung to match up no matter if I'm playing it higher and lower. Make sense? Thanks!

This is the main reason I don't play around with samplers. I would love an answer to this as well.

Seems odd to me that with abletons main thing being stretching/time matching etc that they havent implemented this.

Only Abletons "Sampler" can do this. Simpler will always speed up the sample as you go higher on your midikeyboard.

Is that pretty much the whole draw for Sampler over Simpler? $200 more for this function? Bummer.

sampler doesn't time stretch!

the easiest way to do this is to midi map a keyboard range to a clip slot.

ok, here goes.

load your sample into an audio track and duplicate it 12 times. what you want to do it go into into the clip view of each sample, and then you want to transpose each sample up a semitone... so it will be like +1 +2 +3 +12, etc. you can choose your preffered method of warping but if its a vocal clip i would recommend complex pro. set the global quantization (or you can just select all the clips and change the quantization on them specifically) to something small -- like 1/32, 1/16, or none. then you can map all of these clips to your midi controller starting at root C.

you can also do this in sampler by dragging the flattened clips into sampler then turning scale to 0%, then mapping each key individually so they correspond with the right pitch. hope this helps!

To map a keyboard range to a clip:

Go into MIDI Map Mode.
Choose the clip that you want assigned to a keyboard range.
Hit the note on your keyboard of the 'root' key. (it could be the note of the loop itself, or C or A if you want to play 'all white keys' major or minor respectively).
While still holding that note, select the lowest note on your keyboard that you expect to play the loop as. Then select the highest note on the keyboard that is expected to play the loop.
Exit MIDI Map Mode.

Now your loop will be repitched based on what key you press. The only downside is that you can't play more than one instance of the loop at a time (as a sampler would allow). On the plus, your loop stays synced. You are also able to use Velocity (softer or louder clip playing), Legato (the loop never retriggers until you hit stop). And various forms of Quantization for the triggering. Along with the different methods of clip triggering. It opens up a few fun options.

Also possible is assigning Keyboard Range to that 'channel' so that any highlighted clip within the channel can be played in this manner.

Quality of the repitching depends on the warp mode and sample material :).

If you have multiple clips you want assigned to keyboard ranges, and not enough keyboard, you can change channels for different clips. Or if your keyboard offers layering.... then you've got some interesting possibilities. hahah

if you want to try that business of loading different samples, one for each pitch, you don't have to have Sampler

you can use a bunch of simplers in an instrument rack
