Tempo changes and slow downs

Post by cdiver186 » Fri May 14, 2010 11:40 am

Whats the best way to achieve this? The tempo nudge downs button arent effective for what I want to do with my band - is there anyway I can set the tempo to a keyboard midi slider, and just push up or down the tempo manually? If thats not possible, is there any effective way of resetting the "1" beat after a slow down - for example, if we got to the part of a song that needed alot of tempo freedom from the keyboardist, I could mute the tracks, but then the keyboardist wouldnt have a clue where beat 1 was going to happen - which is vital. And it would be much easier to reset the 1st beat. The closest thing Ive been able to do is click stop on the master transport, then start it again - but this has the really annoying bug of a little "blip" noise if you are using audiounits or vsts after hitting stop.

Is there no way to change the tempo or time signature without the transport keeping in the global time signature?

Thanks for that, its an interesting way to deal with ableton for time signatures, but not quite what Im looking for. I think the best I could hope for is controlling the tempo with a slider or knob - is this possible? I work almost exclusively in the session view, so need a way to do this..

This is not an exact solution but you might be interested any way

I'm not in front of the daw, but it's my recollection that tempo is a parameter that can be automated on the master bus. so you should be able to assign a knob/slider to it.

Wow su, thanks so much for that - had no idea that could be done so easily with renaming scenes - Thank you so much! I dont understand the master bus assignment bit though, which is what Im most after (although the route above will help greatly too) if any one could let me know how that works Id be totally set! Thanks.

Wait! Got it! Figured out how to do it on my axiom 49 - brilliant. Thanks!

Aren't you stuck with 0 to 127 values with an axiom knob?

Em, yeah - why? I thought the only values any midi device can send are 0 - 127? What do see the problem being? Think the slider works better - I mean, for tempo slow downs, setting the min and max values from 140BPM to even 100BMP is alot, and for a live performance you only need an approximation. If you need a dramatic tempo shift quite fast, then doin su's suggestion would work. Im only starting to understand the axiom - once its set up your relatively good, but Im still trying to understand how to use it for ableton and logic, both of which make things more difficult than needs be.
