Why did you change the position?

I like your acoustic treatment

The "accoustic treatment" is just foam and blankets and duvets and stuff hanging from a frame that sits inside my studio room (I'm renting, so couldn't attach things to walls) but they're covered in black cloth and Pacific Island mats and stuff. No major bass trapping, just killing the hi end reflections. The table is on wheels so I can roll it into the next room and use my space for recording instruments or vocals. I had a session last week recording 3 vocalists, so the genelecs came down onto the table and out with me to the temporary "control room" (my living room). Now I'm enjoying having my head right inside the stereo field for a bit. It feels like a nice change, hearing things a bit differently. Its making me listen to music quieter on average so I'm appreciating things other than bass bombast (believe me, the 8040s have some serious bottom end without a sub!! )

Thanks for the info I know I am just being nosy but I would love to see a pic of your studio from your lounge perspective if you don't mind. My 'studio' is the lounge too and would like to see what options I have.
FYI I have just got the 8030s. I cant fathom how good the 8040s are apart from how loud they could be

^ definitely try to get some absorption and diffusion panels in that room, it will improve your sound very much. Don't forget the ceiling too.

with clapping and very carefully listening (form your listening position) you can pretty much determine where the refelections take place, e.g. which wall(s) or if it is in the ceiling...

i hope skeet will post some new pics soon, i just helped him a little bit setting up his room acoustics (he had terrible amounts of reverb in it) and i gave him a good DIY tip for ceiling treatment, even with lights built in. looks very good and does the job fine without robbing the bank.

and niiiccceee clean & tidy setup, like it very much.

I ended up hanging a large coat rack (6 double hooks) on the right wall and it took out a lot of the metallic reverb tail I had problems with.

I've also hit the -4db switch on the back of the 8030's and that has cleaned up the extra (false) low end rumble I had. The room is starting to sound much better already.

However, as well as doing this I'm keen on doing some more acoustic treatment and have decided to invest in a couple of bass traps and some wedge panels for the mirror reflections on either side of the desk. My local shop supplies Universal Acoustics, is this a company that can be trusted or shall I save some more and go with Auralex again?

i have basstraps from Universal Acoustics,they work well.

you could also check wavepanels(australian brand)

auralex is also good,i have the 4" thick absorbers.

the thing i want to stress here is this :

while it all sounds good,it absolutely looks awful to my taste.a studio should not only sound good,but also LOOK good.
it shouldn't look like a studio,but like a wonderful and truly inspiring room from the moment you enter.
you could do this yourself of course...............

but then i found GIK acoustics(thanks to Tarerith's website).they also focus on the LOOKS of acoustic treatment.

they have complete roomkits available,roomkit 3 is going to be my next purchase.

honestly i don't know any real big differences in the brands... they are all more then totally ridiculous overpriced anyhow.

choose what is affordable and looks good, to me the look is also very important, it's like with food the eye eats as well and not just to a small extend.

ugly studios / rooms, dirty, dark and soulless are a nightmare to make music in, at least for me!

and there are loads of ways making good functioning, good looking DIY stuff, the net is full of tips on this.
