Who are the new freaks?

Post by smartabletonuser » Tue May 18, 2010 7:07 pm

When I was a kid it was aphex and squarepusher. But now I'm old and not so into it anymore. So who's got the crazy programming chops these days daddy-o? Who are the hip kids?

Warp records has continuously released good music since the Aphex/Squarepusher days. I think maybe Clark would be something you'd like to check out for that kind of sound.

I think Fennesz does some pretty cool things, his album "Venice" is really amazing.

Not a new artist at all, but Amon Tobin's album Foley Room was good, made with field recordings and improv recording (instead of vinyl samples like he usually does) the result is pleasing and interesting (and there's a "making of" video, wich is much fun for us producers!)

Flying Lotus has been turning a lot heads lately, his music has a very cool syncopated feel, unique sound.

that's what I can think of off the top of my head. What kind of music are you into?

DeadMau5 and Justice

without joking, if there are new "freaks", AS FREAK AS APHEX TWIN OR SQUAREPUSHER WERE AT THEIR TIMES.... I really don't know who. 8O

Warp releases are really cool, but nothing new under the sun IMHO. Aphex or Squarepusher were PIONEERS IMHO.

I don't see any new pioneer in electronic music for now, apart me, of course

I'm glad you have caught my meaning of 'freaks'. A few I've been listening to include
venetian snares - hello? freak alert
otto von shirach - mega freak alert

but venetian is just a more steroid version of squarepusher. i guess nobody has made the kind of impact as sp or afx lately.

otto von shirach, yes +1000, really freaked out!!!!

Mike Patton also (fantomas, mr bungle...), and his label (otto von shirach, dub trio...) while not being particularly electronic artist.... and people like john zorn, bands like estradasphere, secret chiefs 3...

I kinda find some real music freaks in the extreme metal / math metal / grindcore scene (Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Gengis Tron...) that use incredible technique with lots of parallel thinking and originality...

venetian snare is for me just an aphexpusher clone... talented, but obviously not original IMHO

interesting thread mate :D

anyone using hardware only/mpc/rolandmv8000 or renoise/old skool trackers seem to be flava of the month.
