Actually i think this is a well thought out setup. RME Interface, Adam speakers and sub, M-Audio Masterkey, Chieftek silent pc box, all has its space...you don't need much more equipment these days to make good tracks...

I would not keep the sub so close to the box, hard drives do not like electromagnetic fields.

Its still a bad idea because the vibrations can damage the drive. I´ve got a similar situation, and I put some cloth under the computer, that absorbs some of it.

..the computer though isn't shielded for EMF... I'd move it away from the balls.. just to be on the safe side..

Can anyone see anything I could improve on before I add the material to these traps? Positioning for example?

I have one for the ceiling above the sweet spot and one out of shot in rear left corner. I'm hoping this will help with the awful room sound.

Thanks for all the advice on this little project by the way! I started off thinking I was about to spend a shit load of money on bits of foam, to buying a room kit from GIK, then I decided to just source the materials and do it myself. I'm looking forward to hearing at least a little improvement in the room (fingers crossed!)

well you could finish hammering the shit together.. there appears to be a 1/8" gap in the trap closest to the camera. did you stick a little wood glue in there? might not be a bad idea to seal them up. i think i would run a strip of 1/4" foam tape on the back of each frame too as it looks like your walls or the wood is a little wavy. the kind of foam tape you'd use to seal a window sill or door frame with. as far as position.. and i'm not the expert on this.. i thought that the monitors were supposed to be directly in front of the traps sitting perpendicular to them???

Your project looks quite promising, i' d say. Do you keep the backside of your absorbers open and leave a little gap between them and the walls...? And are you planning to also treat your ceiling and floors...? Please deliver some more pics when your ready, this forum lacks a bit of this topic...

Haha! shit, I didn't notice that join, I've fixed it now - and yep, they're all glued, screwed and I've got corner braces on the backs too

Both the walls and the wood are wavy! I was wondering if that would make any difference to the traps, with them not being airtight to the walls etc.

I cant do a lot with the traps behind the speakers as there's just not a lot of room to work with. None of them are screwed down yet, I just took the picture to get some feedback on it before I finished the job off over the weekend. I could pull the entire desk forward to give the speakers more room to breathe, but I'm already very close to the centre of the room as it is

@dru: the room is roughly 7'6 wide by 9' high. its about 10' long, but it has a fitted wardrobe in it that I cant remove, leaving me in a bit of a box room

I'm not 100% on the gap between the trap and the walls. There are some that say they should be flush and some that say they should have space between the wall and the trap. At the minute they're all just balanced on existing nails etc, there's nothing screwed down yet.

I have a trap to build for the ceiling and I'm not sure yet, but I may buy a sheet of barrier shield for the floor. Its wooden floors in the room and I've put a mat down, but I think It might need some more attention.

again, i'm no expert here but i am in construction and have dealt with this kind of shit every once in while being that we've worked on quite a few custom homes. ideally, you'd want a room inside the room, completely decoupled from the walls and ceilings and if possible, the floor slab cut as well. but that's just not possible in most cases. that's why i'd suggest putting a strip of 1/4" foam behind each frame. that way, very little energy is transferred from the frame to the wall and it would absorb the sound. then the only coupling to the wall would be the clips you hung the frame up with. just a thought. it couldn't cost more than a couple of dollars for a roll of foam tape. but i'm not a sound guy.. this just makes sense to me in the construction mindset.

wooden floors are awesome for acoustics!

make the room dry but not dead...!!! that is a huge difference a real dead room is as bad as a super reverberating room...

you need to keep a balance... as for the positioning it looks OK< maybe they speakers can be a tad more from each other apart to get the even triangle between them and you head going... but then it looks like they are squashed to much into the corner... so try to keep a good balance...

as for the mounting, yes opinions divide, i would put them flush first and hear how it is... if not satisfied it's easy to apply some distance holders afterwards, i'd say.

yes and no, this you don't want because of good acoustics as such, this you only want for the sake of your neighbours / neighbourhood.

usually done by clubs or real big band recoding rooms in residential areas, to avoid sound spilling to the outside.
that still does not guarantee you any kind of good sound inside.
