Clicks in Recording

I am pretty sure others have mentioned this problem before and wanted to know if they found a solution. I record vocals from a microphone that runs through the duo into my powermac G4. It records beautifully for a while and then suddenly I review a track I have recorded and find it to be filled with strange clicks that ruin the recording. It is not an intermittency in my cables, I know this. And the clicks seem to be triggered off by sound. For example, if there is complete silence while it is recording, no clicks will occur. But if I begin to sing into the mic, the clicks begin. I can even hear the clicks being created if I monitor my input through Live.

Hope somone can shed some light onto this. Thank you.

Are you using OS X? If so, try it in OS 9.
Failing that, try increasing the latency setting in the audio prefs.

yeah, i am running it in OSX. Id rather not have to work in 9. I guess I'll try the latency adjustment. bizzare...

however the sad reality is that the OS X/Live combination still doesn't quite cut it.

i'm thinking about getting one of those new powerbooks that will only boot in X. can you give me a brief lowdown of how Live is not working well with OSX? i'd really appreciate it.

Live by itself in OS X seems to work pretty well. Possibly the GUI is more sluggish, but if you get a new machine you'll have a much better graphics card than I have, which will probably help a lot.
The show-stopper for me is what happens when I try to use Live with my Mobile I/O audio interface. Basically, dropouts all the time when the CPU load gets over about 20%. The same deal in OS 9 is silky-smooth. This could be an OS X issue or a drivers issue, but it's not helped by Live OS X not letting you disable unused audio channels.
Why not put the Live demo on a CD & take it down to your local Apple store & give it a try on a new Powerbook? That would be the real test (unless you also need to use external audio hardware).

i'm using an 828. in Live 2 /OS9 i can mute/enable outs and ins in pairs. are you saying i won't be able to do this in X?

that's correct, though Ableton are aware of the issue and have promised a fix.

that's good to hear. there seem to be a lot of bugs with 2.0.1. have you heard any word about when an update may be released?

I'm in no hurry, to be honest, I'm really happy with the stuff I'm doing with Live 2.01 in OS 9 right now.
