Problem Recording MIDI input in Session View with Remote SL

This is a really basic question. I was wondering if there is a way to record MIDI input in Session View into the clip you are recording using a MIDI controller like the Remote SL, Evolution UC33e, Akai APC40, etc? I seem to be able to do it using actually hardware (Nord Lead, Vermona) but it has never worked when I am using a standard MIDI controller assigned to an audio unit or vst. The controller is running via USB. Here is my usual set up:

Macbook Pro 2.14 ghz
MOTU Ultralite mark one
novation remote 37 SL
nord lead 2
akai apc40

I can record MIDI changes with those controllers in arrangement view but it has never worked for session.

Can you not record automation in session view?
That seems ridiculous.
