Nice devices, but not exactly going to rule the world - they've been around a while and have a niche, rnb and hip hop producers such as Teddy Riley love them, but they ain't flying out of the door.

price tag is also quite high as i remember, granted buying all those parts separately (pads, keys, processor, etc.) would probably be more expensive, but not everyone throws down for equipment 5 g's at a time.

Plus, only 5 faders on this model. Does anyone like the idea of an "all-in-one" package with only 5 faders?? Hmm...

Does hip-hop production actually need more than 5?

Every time I see it I think that's a really expansive laptop.
I guess good for people who don't like making music using computers...
But wait, it is a computer

The hardware chosen for the computer portion is optimized for audio use. It's more like buying a "music PC" from a pro audio vendor than just picking up a Dell at BestBuy.
Anyone who thinks Open Labs stuff is too expensive isn't the target audience.

1. loop of someone else's music
2. kick sample
3. snare sample
4. your vocal
I count 4! That means you've got one fader left over for anything you want! Crazy!

The Open Labs DBeat is pretty cool though, Live built into one of their boxes with pads and faders, saw a video with Teddy Riley making beats with it in a hotel room
http://www.openlabs.com/dbeat.htm
Only costs $4000 ...
PS - this doesn't include the cost of Live. You have to buy it extra ... it does come with truepianos, reaper, guru, sylenth, wusikstation, and a few more software titles.

And the faders look like a korg nanokontrol... after all it looks like a case with a custom faceplate to integrate all of your usual gear.
