Cannot use Live as an audio master to MAX/MSP!!!

Post by novakaine » Wed Apr 20, 2005 3:32 am

Hey, shouldn't running Live (4.1.2) as a host or master and routing MAX/MSP (newest version) to an audio in of Live be a pretty straightforward process? I opened Live first, then MAX/MSP, then tried to select MAX from Live's audio input pull down menu, but found no routing from MAX. I AM able to use Live as a slave to MAX, just not the other way around. I thoroughly looked through all the tutorials, forums etc. on Ableton and Cycling '74 and came up empty. Help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks!

its not quite as simple as MIDI is...

My suggestion would be download soundflower from cycling 74.

It is kickass. It allows up to 16 channels porting from any program to any other program, regardless of rewire ability or not. its really nice, and experimenting turns up cool ideas...

any ways, direct Max/MSP's DSP preferences audio output to soundflower, and then select Soundflower in Live as the audio device input.

this should do it.

Not to hard, once you get the right stuff

OK, thanks for the quick response! I get the impression that Rewire (at least through MAX to Live) wasn't designed to transport audio data. Unfortunately, Soundflower is OSX (guess what I have!), so that route won't work. Are you sure there's no way to simply tranfer audio via Rewire from MAX (slave) to Live (master)?

Thanks again!

there is, try using the rewire~ object.

I assume you have MSP. That should be a possibility, though I've never used it.
