Am I warping correctly? House / EDM

Post by arachn1d » Thu May 27, 2010 12:02 am

So, I hear many different opinions on warping EDM / House music.

I started out by doing the following:

Placing the 1.1.1 marker then hitting "warp from straight" then checking BPM. If it wasn't a solid number I would tweak the transients around 17 or 33 to snap to grid and see if it was good, and then I'd also check around the end of the song and see if it was still slightly on time. The transients wouldn't all be perfectly aligned to the grid but it was a couple miliseconds off without needing any warp markers and the BPM was perfect (which after reading a tutorial said this is all you need to do)

Over a couple weeks I felt like I was doing it wrong... just a hunch... so i asked a couple people and they said you should be placing markers at least every 64 / 32 bars for the "confidence" that it's warped correctly, and it also aids as a visual queue if you place it on the drops (which also helps with timing). And I've been using this technique recently. It's not much work, it's easy to just place a warp marker and snap to grid every 32 and especially on every drop. I like the confidence for this but I don't know if this is actually making things worse? Reason I ask because the BPM won't be perfect and the transients between the warp markers aren't necessarily perfect either (they're a couple miliseconds off if I select the distance; which was the same from the previous technique.)
Any pointers?

I saved a sample of my techniques here:

I mostly use MP3s, so my points are never saved with the file. I never use the hard warping. When I load a file, I immediately hit the WARP button to stop the auto-warping. Then I drag the first maker to the very, very start of the first beat. Then I place markers at 5, 9, 17. This is usually enough for the entire file if I do it right. I look over the clip for obvious visual changes in the track, and adjust markers around those points. Maybe 2 or 3 additional markers might be needed. This method has worked flawlessly for me, and I can warp a track in less then 10 seconds, usually without listening to it. The odd time I'll need to use the beats, so I might place the first marker well into the track, and map from there, but then I just slide the starting point back to where I need it.

If it's a well produced track, this always works for me.
