Trouble with Virtual MIDI

Post by rsagevik » Wed Apr 20, 2005 8:08 pm

Bidule/Live combo truly rocks, but I have some issues with the virtual midi stuff..
So far I`ve tried Midi Yoke, MapleVMC and LoopBe1 and they all work.. kinda :(

With Maple and LoopBe the midi data hangs from time to time which ofcourse make it
useless to a certain degree.

Midi Yoke on the other hand works perfectly within live/bidule so that seems to be the better option.

..but it seems my laptop have som problems with Yoke(s).. with Midi Yoke
installed it refuses to boot properly. I normally have to try several times before it boots (2 or more..)

Anybody else experiencing something like this?
or maybe any tips on other virtual midi cables available?

Virtual MIDI Disappointment

Post by BriGuy » Sat Mar 18, 2006 2:45 am

I guess in the year (almost) since you posted this, things have not improved. I just spent an entire night struggling with the same issues:

MIDI Yoke - crashed my PC and prevented my from starting Win XP Pro - had to do a System Restore - very annoying.

Maple Midi Tools - worked! I was jumping around all excited. Then, I added one too many VSTs and it stopped. Now I can't make Ableton receive MIDI on any Maple port

LoopBe - just kept telling me I had MIDI feedback - totally useless.

Incidentally, I'm trying to play MIDI generated by the funky KOAN X Generative Music app. KOAN can send MIDI output fine it's just Ableton letting me down!

I have some stuff with saved MIDI from KOAN:

but I think it would be even better to stream it live and random straight from KOAN.

LoopBe actually works great, but this was frustrating a little until I saw the trick to using LoopBe with Live. Make sure you have your track MIDI ins set explicitly. If you have any midi tracks set to "all inputs" and you arm, this can cause feedback (which will cause the automatic muting/loss of signal).
UTENZIL a tool... of the muse.

LoopBe Working Better

Post by BriGuy » Wed Mar 22, 2006 12:44 am

Thanks for that. I've made sure all MIDI tracks are receiving from a specified channel rather than AllIns. It does seem to work better. I think there may still be a problem with my source application (KOAN X). Some of the "voices" it outputs sometimes share 2 MIDI channels. This might be causing the feedback.

At any rate, it does seem to work much better than Maple MIDI. Now I can generate random music and output from KOAN through Ableton. Set it going and you've got instant ambient music!
