Mad for metallic

Post by Hindsite » Sun May 30, 2010 10:16 am

Hi

Am in the position of trying to recreate a sound for a new track, but Im quite new to this and need pointing in the right direction Synth wise.

the sound(s) I am interested in are

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8EKnweNvwQ the repeating (Chicago piano?) @ 1:14 and the stab/pad @ 1:19

or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBkp0nd_ ... re=related around 2:25 repeating stab

So I have saved up some dosh and am in the market for a VST to suit, I read that the dave Clarke lushness could be a DX7 or DX11 which would mean an fm8 but as I already have operator maybe this is not a good buy albiet I could load in the old yamaha banks into the fm8.

or should I be looking at reaktor or something else????

So i love my Techno and like the sounds above, can you steer me to a suitable synth, Ive tried several demos of the NI variety but yet to no avail.......money doesnt grow on trees so i'd like to get my choice right

sorry if any of my terminology is incorrect but learning still am I

many thanks

Before you go rushing off buying stuff, have a play with sweeping some of the band pass filters on some operator FM presets, you should find similar effects to what you are looking for, Try experimenting with the amount of resonance too.

Page 356 of the manual has more info on the filter section and I believe you can try out a demo version of operator if you dont have it already. Bair in mind that operator presets can sound flat next to other vst synths though as chorus delay effects etc arent built into it, you add those post operator.

Hi Hindsite, for me when I try to get these sounds I sampling the sounds of the synth ( you have operator ) playing a chord and then start to play around with Lives filter/delay/erosion/etc you will find that when you tune the new sample down I takes on a different quality that is different to just playing the same chord further down the keyboard, if you then do things like map Lives filter to velocity you can start to get some interesting sounds. Your second example the Slam remix sounded like a backwards sample, something else you could try. Check this out in youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r1h2XmWXBI
to see what I mean, the chords are played by a DX100 which is what operator is very similar in architecture to. Like the other guy said play around with what you have at the moment, believe me you are not going to buy a vst synth that just has presets with names like "RED 2" in them, you have to add your on thing to the sound. Red 2 is still one of my favorite tracks ever, for me the metallic sound you are after is only bettered by Maurizio. Speak soon

Man, operator is a beast, I guess thats why I was so tempted by FM8......maybe being a bit lazy....quicker easier results (short term is that a bad thing?)

I guess my synthesis knowledge will be better for it.

Anyone know any goldmine tip sites for operator......bar the manual

thanks

I got my moneys worth out of Nick's Tutorials Operator series http://nickstutorials.com/products/soun ... e-operator

I'm sure I won't be the only person to recommend it :)
