M-Audio and PC vs. Mac

I've been looking into the Firewire Audiophile because it's really cheap and has the features I need, but I've read a lot of threads on this board that make it sound like a pain in the ass. I've also noticed that most of these complaints seem to come from Mac users, so I'm wondering if anyone's had a bad experience with an M-Audio product and a PC? I run XP Pro, 512MB, would use the box for tracking in Live and Cubase and as a MIDI in/out. Thanks!

I`ve got an M_Audio FW Audiophile. All I can say is that I`m very happy with it.
Cheap, easy to use and install. I`d say go for it.

I have a PC running XP Home SP2 and initially I had a lot of problems running it off the firewire port on my motherboard (microstar mobo for an Athlon 3400+) - the headphone switch and volume control knobs would stop working after 30 mins or so with the current drivers so I had to use an older set.

As I had one lying around, I installed a cheapo firewire PCI card and tried that instead and, with the latest drivers, the problem went away and I've been very happy since (I get the occasional buzz but my flat has problems with rf interfance from the boiler).

I would check very carefully the supported firewire interfaces off the M-Audio site.

hiya

i bought my firewire audiophile and have been using it for studio and livesets for a few months - no problems at all.

im running it on a pc - p4 2.4 with 512mb and using a PCI firwire card.

just a thought - bought mine on ebay for 135 USD.. Brand new from an outfit that have an ebay presence. just a tip for anyone wanting to save a few $$$

I just got the firewire 410 last night and other than me having some issues with my brain (it was 4 / 20 in the United States) I installed the core audio driver and then hooked up the unit - it works fine and sounds better than my old digi 001 (Ouch)

but what's up with that stupid blue light flashing when I turn it off - Am I suppose to turn off my computer or unplug the unit?

turn off the unit.. and be careful as they don't support hot swapping.

I press the silver button off but that's when it goes from a solid blue to blinking blue - I have to turn off the computer to make that stop

but I heard it's not recommended to turn off your computer all the time

i dont think its a major switching off your pc, that may be a bit of an old wives tale, not sure. i would just switch off your pc when you arent going to be using for a period, and switch off the m-audio as well. if you plan to use it all later in the day or whatever leave the whole lot running! if you are unsure email m-audio support, they are pretty good.
