On the subject of video (but not iPad), almost all video streaming sites have been running like utter shit on Firefox on my MBP OS 10.6 lately.

I posted about similar stuff and crashes with firefox awhile back and other browsers were recommended, but old habits die hard.

WOW! Good thing you didn't listen to my advice and cancel the order. I'd just been reading about long waits in major markets. Nice. Those little Chinese bastards must really be picking up the pace! Perhaps they felt the lick of the master's whip?

Well, I'll believe it when I have it in hand. Going after work.

But I do think a lot of the people that are on the waiting list went and ordered online because they couldn't handle the "not knowing when" factor, or they decided it was an impulse purchase they really didn't need, or after putting their name on the waiting list they went out and celebrated and then got a DUI on the way home which cost them the money they had earmarked for the iPad.

Oh, and ironically the email Apple sent to inform me looks like shit on my iPhone.

But it's gmail though.

But still.

Apple have decided not to continue implementing the standard web protocol that GMail uses in favor of something new that will force a half ass migration when its not forcing dissension.

They actually stole this strategy from Microsoft, but chose not to steal Microsoft's Oh-shit-we-fucked-the-duck-hurry-and-release-a-half-ass-patch-that-we'll-patch-and-re-patch-later policy in favor of their own fuck-you-up-your-consumer-ass-look-its-pretty (tm) approach.

I think half ass is the appropriate term here because the initial gmail page is formatted for the iPhone as well as strictly text email, but any email that includes graphics is fucked.

^ don't you have an option to download images?

that could be a setting to avoid locking the shit out of your device while you open and download that message your mom sent where she pasted those uncropped, upcompressed 6 megapixel pictures of her cat with a Christmas vest on in the body of the email.

on my phone I press THE TRACKBALL and get an option to "Get Images". If I don't go that route, I just read it without the bling.

It's not really a matter of displaying pictures but more of graphics being encoded into the format of the email that it fucks up. Eveything is jumbled all over the place.

@LSZ - through safari

can you get Opera on that thing? Their browser on the blackberry used to be really top notch before RIM got their head out of their ass and improved their own.

Vimeo yes. Google video no.

I've played a number of Google vids on my iPad. They seem to be encoded with H.264.

Is there one you can post a link to that isn't working?
Just tried again and the blank page with the "download this video" link seems to be working ok for the google videos I tried. So maybe all's well... :)

Edit: I think direct google video pages are ok, not sure about embedded google videos in other pages...

As far as I know you can only run Safari on it and I don't foresee Apple opening things up to alternative browsers..their whole control/security freak thing.

And also as no surprise I see Apple seeing this as more of an issue with the site developer that they need to fix, not Apple. If the site can't be fixed then most likely Apple will respond with "make an app for that."

I've downloaded and run two different browsers on the iPad: Atomic Lite and tab-something-or-other - both free, both ok.
