DJ style EQ with the APC?

Post by Kris O'Neil » Sun Jun 06, 2010 11:56 am

Hey guys & girls,

I'm sorry if this have already been talked about, but reading through all the 988 replies in the official APC thread, seemed a bit much.

Anyway, I've been having an eye on the APC40/20 for a while, as it seemed like a proper substitute for the typical DJ mixer, for Ableton use.

What's holding me back at the moment, is that I don't really see how you would be able to use a DJ style 3*EQ with the APC?

I wouldn't really feel too comfortable, just using a low- and highpass filter..

If anybody is having an APC set up somewhat like the traditional DJ mixer, I'd love to see how they've done it..

Alternative ideas is absolutely welcome as well :-)

All the best wishes,

Kris

I ran into this problem too (after I bought the unit, unfortunately... should have done more planning!)

A UC33e was my next purchase, and I love it. The build quality certainly doesn't meet Akai's, but the small size and "3-band EQ friendliness" is great. Recommended.

Perhaps a UC33e / Launchpad combo is the way to go?

but yes it's not designed with channel EQ'ing in mind out of the box. So if you're not interested in its potential in other areas maybe something like the UC33e as mentioned wold be better for you, or the Vestax VMC600 if you wanted descent build quality and a few more options.

I'd probably go with the VCM if I was DJ'ing.

I use my APC40 for DJing aswell and this is how I like to do the DJ EQing:

1) enable the APC as a remote device under preferences > Midi, this way u can overwrite the standard midi

2)for the first 4 channels strips (I feel like 4 tracks being mixed at once is enough) I create a EQ 3 for each one then put it in an effects rack, then map the lows, mids, and highs to the macro controls on the rack, then midi map the track select button to the "grab" function on the racks (this makes it so when u press the corosponding track select button, it'll bring up the contrls for just the eq, instead of the last select effect rack on that channel)

3) adjust the EQ max and minimums to your preferences, this way the track select buttons will always instantly take you to the EQs for tyhe channel you press

hope that helps!

I'd remap the 8 available pans.. so I guess you could have 2 EQ's (low, mid, hi) ready to go at all times, except when you switch to your sends..

Hi, that's exactly what I wanted to do, but I ran into a problem (I'm an APC noob though):
I assigned the pans to low pass / hi pass filters for each channel; but everytime I switch to the send view and return to the pan page again, my user assigned pan knobs are turned all the way down, instead of displaying the current value. Which then results in a parameter jump when I use the knobs.
Do you have any idea what could cause this behaviour? Some of the preference settings must be wrong.

Thanks!

Sadly it's known behaviour, a bug of sorts....

You just need to enable 'remote' for your APC's output port in Live's midi settings.

Thanks man, I hadn't noticed the scroll bar on the MIDI ports page! Problem solved.
