MIDI Sync in Live

Post by lapieuvre » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:30 pm

I try to sync 2 Live machines in 2 different computers, but the sync is weird. The tempo on the slave Live keeps on moving up or down around the original tempo of the Master Live.

Any Ideas why it doesn't sync?

Thanks

thats normal operation.. it just cant propperly sync...

do it in dj sync by just cuing them together.. the metronome might help for that when you are not on stage

syncs fine on my machine and outboard gear.

YMMV, many have problems. if people would submit bug reports rather than just rant on the forum it might get fixed.

so you dont have tempo fluctuations when live is in clock slave mode?

in a situation wher a software company hasnt adressed the problem in so many years actually much more users should "rant"..

critizism is not ranting... and this issue is very critic worthy...

I've tried to break it, it won't. even with dragging with bpm wildly up and down the outboard gear (mpc, jx305) catches up in a few beats.

neither criticisms or rants are bug reports. this has to be a big one with Ableton. they also use the software, they know midi sync is wonky. for a DAW that is so geared for live use they call it Live sync is essential.

I'd encourage people to try all the settings and combinations of midi clocks to try to get it working.

Live 6 worked great in sync, why does 8 not work properly?

there's no answer for that to be found on a forum, just speculation.

be sure to give it a shot and check ALL the available settings.

Are you saying it worked great also when syncing 2 Live machines in 2 different computers?

I think your settings are incorrect. I just tried this and the sync works flawlessly. I even printed the click from the slave machine and the click from the master machine and they lock perfectly. Your problem must be that the mtc smpte timecode settings are different between machines, that will cause substantial drift over time. Also, for mtc to work, you have set the tempo the same on both machines. you also need to export the tempo map from one machine to the other if your tracks have tempo changes.

please be more clear about what kind of sync you are trying to achieve. If you are using regular midi sync, like beatclock, there is no bar and beat positional reference. I don't see how you would want to use this, unless you're just sync'ing an external synth's arpeggiator to live or something like that.

Two machines sync'd must have MTC to lock correctly, in my experience. Please someone chime in if you've found a way to dependably sync two machines with something besides MTC (which references smpte, which is why your smpte settings have to be the same between machines).

+ 1

The only problem is that Live can't run as MTC master..

seriously? that is totally ridiculous 8O Not that I doubt what you are saying, but that is something that Ableton should have resolved years ago. There must be some explanation as to why Live can't run as an mtc master? I've always used Pro Tools as the master and mtc works great, assuming the settings are correct.

See for yourself in Live's preferences under MIDI Sync output. It's simply not there.

Why? I'm not aware of any official explanation.

And still it drifts...

I had an old macbook and my mate had a newer macbook pro. I had to nudge my machine foward from time to time...
Now I have a new mbp and my mates older mbp falls behind...

:x

That´s just not right.

edit: not to speak about onstage situations.

really? they screwed the timing? if you can you should wordclock your audio interfaces..maybe they are in time than...

however.. it would be better if ableton would have prepared the program for syncing years ago...
now we are in the middle of technoband trend allready...

but seems that the other software companys are blind towards this trend aswell.. the monster szise lunchpads are a good example aswell..

the good ol times where intelligent products where ahead of the market demand are over i guess...
