Ok, so here's the deal. Firstly, I'm using a Mac, running OS X 10.5 I was trying to find the vst component files for a while and eventually realised they were located in my pro-tools folder. When I went to custom VSTs in ableton's preferences and searched for the pro-tools plug in alias folder, I tried to open it and ableton crashed. Then ableton wouldn't open because it crashed as it was scanning for custom VSTs. I then deleted the preferences.cfg and was able to open live again, but if I try to open the location of the component files again, it crashes and back to square one. I'm not really sure how I can fix this problem. One of the component files must be causing the crash but how do I know which one? Really hope someone can help.
Thanks,
dave

if you are really stuck, trial and error is your friend.
if you don't have lots of plugs, remove them all from the folder and add them back in one by one until you find the crashy one(s).
or you could test them in a binary search kinda way, i.e. one half first, then the other half, etc.

Ya, I did that and found the problem file eventually. But I still can't seem to see any of the three programs I've installed. Guitar Rig, etc...
