3rd party MIDI plugins?

Post by Danjel » Tue Apr 19, 2005 3:53 pm

There are many free VST plugins available that will process/generate MIDI that I would like to use with Live (e.g. an arpegiator).

Is there a way to install and use them in the same way as the MIDI plugins that come with live (that willa llow you to insert them BEFORE and instrument)

If not, is there a way to put a VST plugin that generates MIDI on one track and then have it send that data to the input of another track?

I tried this but it didn't work:

VST plugin on track 1 (e.g. an arpegiator)
Track 2: MIDI input = track 1 Monitor On (or Off.. tried both)

Hello Danjel,

Usually, inserting the .dll file corresponding with your MIDI pluggin (ex: loungelizard, B4, etc...) in your VST folder is sufficient (as for your audio VSTs).
I guess it will be the same for the MIDI generating pluggins.

Does it answer to your question?

This is IMHO not the case, unfortunately.
A midi plugin (not Live's own) will be presented with midi in but audio out when inserted in a midi track, as if it were a midi instrument.
I don't know if some plugs expose a midi in in other tracks.
For now, in this case, I host the midi plugs in something like Plogue Bidule and route the midi from Live to Bidlule, through the plug and back.

if i have understand your post

you should try my plug ins (i have made them with synthedit)

midi-lfo2

joystickctrl:
control ableton live with a joystick, start complex action with only one button or one axis ),

midictrl (send or remap midi cc...)

all of them are free

you could send plug in's midi out directly to one of your ableton live midi in (you have to install midi yoke virtual midi port drivers first
http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http:// ... /myoke.htm)

you should find them on the tools section of my home page

http://vinuesa.club.fr/projet-flou/index.htm

this plugs are still in development, so you can made suggestion and bugs report

and if you have ideas for other midi plug ins....

The problem is that if you drop a VST plugin onto a MIDI track, Ableton Live automatically assumes the plugin is generating audio and switches the track to Audio Output (and no mid can be routed fromt hat track to another).

The workaround that people have been using is to route MIDI via MIID Yoke or LoopBe to an external application like Max/MSp or Bidule.

have you try my midi-lfo2 or joystickctrl?

http://vinuesa.club.fr/projet-flou/index.htm

on the tools section (it's free so you have to search..)

just put them on a ableton track's fx insert
all audio signal are bypassed but theyo could send midi to any windows multi client midi in port (as midi yoke)
if you have an ableton live midi in port set to this port (for instance Midi yoke NT1) you could received the midi-lfo2 midi data

you could consider it as it was outside of ableton but it is'nt :)

thanks to david haupt and his midi out synthedit module

Looks like a good option!

Hey this looks like a good option!

How CPU efficient is it? (Usually a problem with plugins built with high level languages/tools).
How would this comparte to a plugin built with Max/MSP?

cheers,
